NEED HELP IN FINDING BIRTH PLACE in Italy

Our family has searched for years to find where our ggrandrfather was born. Is there SOMEONE THAT CAN HELP US FIND HIS BIRTH PLACE in Italy.

A great aunt said that the post mark on the letters, when translated to English meant " Waters of Moses" It is in Northern Italy.

Nicolo came to the USA in 1880, with a brother ( do not know his name) who was a professional violin player. The brother returned to Italy.

Are you a family member or a hired hand? What I mean is that none of the leads provided are productive and there might be further family leads that have been overlooked, withheld or are part of family oral history which you maynot be party to.

The only positive step that I can offer is that there are only two persons (possibly related) residing in Padova, Italy who may have some knoweldge about the family.

As Peter timber stated:"There might be further family leads overlooked" is there a way you could check with the city or county in which he resided to obtain documents such as naturalization papers ? The county would be a good place to start. If there is a record of naturalization this will provide a lot of info, and a death certificate if you are able to obtain it.

Can you scan the the envelope with the post mark and upload it here so suanj can take a look at it? I think that might get you going in the right direction and if suanj can read the postmark, more than likely she can tell you the correct italian spelling of the surname.

In case you don't have any envelope showing the post mark, can you tell us how that place "Waters of Moses" would have sound, more or less, when read in Italian? How can you say that the place was in Northern Italy?
I found a name of a village but it's in the Calabria region, Southern Italy: ACQUAFORMOSA province of Cosenza. The meaning in English is not Waters of Moses but to a non-Italian speaking this could have been the translation.

I have a few of my own lines, that I have searched and searched and searched, to no avail.
I looked up the white pages yesterday and spoke with a Stefano Mehle of Padova. I asked him where his surmane orginated from. While he did not know exactly, he thought it came from the Slavia area, just over the border of Italy.
He also gave me a phone number of his aunt in Udine.

Stefano went on to say, that a uncle Domenico Mehle had emmigrated to the US to the state of Colorado and died in Utah.

I asked Stefano how his name was prounounced? He said the "h" was silent.

We exchanged email addressess and Stefano too would like to know how the research turns out.

I am looking for NICOLO MEHLE born in Italy in 1860-1864.

His tomb stone says death date of 1864, but other family records say 1860.
We are trying to look up the naturalization papers at the moment.

All of the letters, my aunt had, were lost in the Teton dam flood.
Most of the older family members have passed away, and us great grand children only know the stories of bits and pieces that have been passed down about Nicolo Mehle.

I appreciate all the help the forum is giving me.

I found the 1910 census.
It looks like he only filed his intent but maybe he was not naturalized.

Nicholas Mehley, he always lived on Lancaster ave.

The census states: •Pa - First papers filed (declaration of intent)

Maybe try to locate their marriage record.
