Girgenti history
Girgenti history
Hi I am a Girgenti, currently living in Fla. but previously from Brooklyn, New York. Fathers name Salvatore J ---his brothers were John, Nick maybe another that had died awhile ago ---mothers name is Mary (anne ?) nee- diorio girgenti Grandfathers name was Vincenzo Grandmothers name was Josephine (a)
Does anyone know where I can search to narrow down. I tried the ellis island ship manifest---found only one and that info doesn't really let me know if it is the correct one. Most family members don't have enough info or can't remember
Thanks for any help

Re: Girgenti history
can you please clarify. Is it entries into the USA other than ellis Island in NYC that you are seeking to locate in order to ascertain if specific persons arrived in the USA as immigrants? =Peter=

1. Your father is Salvatore ....... year of birth and where born USA or Italy
2. Your uncle John ......year of birth and where born USA or Italy
3. Your uncle Nick ...... year of birth and where born USA or Italy
4. Mary (anne) Di Orio/Girgenti.........who is she the mother of? Year of birth and where born and her husbands name.
5. Grandfather Vincenzo Girgenti married to Grandmother Josephine (a) (Giuseppina). Are these your grandparents or your fathers grandparents? Years of birth(s), where born?
If any of these people were born in Italy please let us know about what year they traveld to the USA (for each person).
One other thing, what state did the family settle in when they arrived and did they move around?
Thanks for any additional info you can supply.

Re: Girgenti history
Hi Elizabeth--
-my father is Salvatore Joseph Girgenti he was born in the US in 12/5/1918. His father is Vincenzo and his mother was Josephine (a) (Giuseppina). They both were born in Italy I believe that they ( but I can't find any record of her entering the US) came in early 1900's (?) Vincenzo was listed as Sicilian and passed away in 1970 at 89 years. Salvatore's brothers john and nick were born in the US. Mary (anne) Di Orio/Girgenti is the wife of Salvatore---my mother- They all settled in NY mostly residing in Brooklyn, NY
Trying to find some cousins that have more info than i have.
Thanks,

Re: Girgenti history
Found on ancestry
Probable WWII draft card states he is from.........
Adrano, province: Catania - region: Sicily
I haven't had any luck finding a manifest for Vincenzo or Giuseppa (Josephine). Do you happen to know her maiden name and approximate year of birth?
I also searched for a census record that listed the family and came up with nothing.
From ancestry
Index to Declaration of Intent for Naturalization: New York County, 1907-1924 Index to Declaration of Intent for Naturalization: New York County, 1907-1924
Name: Vincenzo Girgenti
Declaration
Volume: 403
Declaration

New York County Supreme Court Naturalization Petition Index, 1907-24
Name: Vincenzo Girgenti
Address: 303 E. 39St.
Date: 3 Oct 1922
Volume #: 564
Page #: 138
I also searched on Footnote for his naturalization and came up with nothing. The naturalization will list the day, month and year he entered the USA and the name of the ship he sailed on.
Do you or any family member happen to have his naturalization papers? If not, you will have to contact the NARA to obtain a copy.
I'm sorry I couldn't have been of more help but I will keep looking for a manifest and census records.

Re: Girgenti history
Oh my--- all of you who've replied are just amazing. I truly appreciate it.
With all the name (mis) spellings it's a wonder anyone knew who anyone was. The draft card for Vincenzo for WWII may not be correct as my father Salvatore (his son) was in the war. Also Vincenzo, Josephine and Nick seem to be correct but then the name Sam for Salvatore is confusing to me. My fathers brother - John's info is July 1 1931 and died July 21 1996. His son Paul seems to think Josphine (Giuseppina) maiden name was Panceca which is similar ( I guess) to Purpura which SUSANJ came up with.
Now that everyone is gone where may I continue to search?
Liquidflex81--- where is you(r) family from? The names Nicholas, John and Salvatore are within my families range, but not the others
Thanking you all again,
Nykrfan

Re: Girgenti history
Great job Biff and suanj I think the marriage you found is very probable based on the years of the childrens births.
