Hello all,

I'm trying to research my paternal grandfather's family, but I really have very little information, so I'm kind of stuck.

My great-grandfather's name was Giacomo Calvi (born 1884), and he was born and raised in Reggio di Calabria. He married a woman named Theresa Drago (born 1891), who was supposed to be from a place called Cacurri Calabria, but I've searched all around and it seems no such place exists.

The two were married in Italy (I think) and came to America sometime in the early 20th century.

I've heard that there's a town called Calvi in Italy, but does anyone have any information on the surname?

What information are you looking for ? Are you seeking the Calvi family and think the town of origin is Calvi or are you looking for the town for some other reason. Please explain what you want. Peter

I am looking for the history of the name Calvi, if anyone knows anything about it. Was the surname named for the town or was the town named for the family?

I'm also trying to find my great-grandfather's parents' names, but I'm at a loss for how to do so.

To find your grandparents names or anything else about your family in Italy you need to know the town of origin in Italy. All records and documents and even relatives for that matter are in the town of origin. So go to Ellis island.org and look up their arival and when you see their names you can find the ships manfiest and the town of origin and their year of birth. reemeber Italian woman never lose their maiden name so she would be listed iuin her maiden name.

Now Calvi is listed in the italian surname dcitionary and it is a base name meaning that all other variation or alterations like calvetti, calvanelli etc come from Calvi and it has no real meaning except the word Calvo in Italian means bald and during Roman times it was Calvus which means Calvo.

Remember you have to find the town of origin because Calvi is a very common name. Peter

All right, the town of origin was Reggio di Calabria. How can I obtain the names of my great-grandfather's parents from here? Do I have to go to Italy or can I write the city from the United States?

Reggio Calabria is the provincial capital and a city as well. Did they come from the province of Reggio Calabria or the City of reggio Calabria?? Did you check Ellis island records for their arrival? The ships manifest will tell you the town of origin. Peter

Hi Bill: very probable exact birthplace is CACCURI(currently in Crotone province)..
also very probable are this Teresa Drago single age 19 in 1910 ..ship's manifest, in travel with Giuseppe brother single(and also many persons coming from Caccuri).. contact in Italy was Raffaele Drago brother-Caccuri http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/searc ... 0131%2ETIF
IF this are your Teresa, sure married in USA..from ship's manifest final destination are..Ellwood-Pa(hoping not mistaken)..

And they had nine children, Mary, Rose, Frank, John, Delina, Josephine, Elizabeth, Margaret, Robert and my grandfather Ralph. They all live in Pennsylvania today, and the surname is Calve (changed from Calvi).

Hmmm...I believe I found something in the LDS Family History Library for the Drago side of the family. Has anyone heard of places in Reggio Calabria called "S. Martino" and "Sinopoli"? And if so, are they close to Crotone? Thanks!

Hi: are only an San Martino; in the past was Common, currently are an fraction of Taurianova town-Reggio Calabria province.
the exact and actual name are San(San=S.) Martino di Taurianova..also Sinopoli are in Reggio Calabria province..

For my last question, do you think that the family Calvi was named after the town of Calvi? Or was the town of Calvi named after the family? Thanks.
