Poss dumb question on passing on citizenship......

If my Grandmother had my father in 1942 but she did not become a US citizen until AFTER 1948, could she have still passed citizenship to my father???? I know women could not pass citizenship down until after 1948 but was wondering if that worked for only children born after or their birth date was not important????

This is a very important technicality to me.

Here's my understanding from reading the various interpretations:

* Your grandmother was Italian at the time of your father's birth.
* Therefore your father was "Italian" (unless he renounced).
* You were born after 1948, so the maternal line can apply.

I think there's a good chance you qualify. But I would definitely post the question to the nearest consulate and let them verify that. I've had reasonable luck getting answers to my questions from my consulate.

Sorry, no, this is not correct.

Father did not inherit Italian citizenship from grandmother (his mother) because women could not pass citizenship prior to 1948.

A child born before Jan 1, 1948 would be "Italian" if and only if his/her father was Italian.

Catherine, are there any other lines that may offer a possibility? Remember that there is no generational limit so you can go back to a greatgrandparent or, conceivably, to a greatgreatgrandparent.

No. Not unless my great uncle could pass along. All of the Calderoni's were Italian at the time of my fathers's birth except his dad. Dagnabit. And I married me an American man, so thats out too.

Though, I was cruising real estate in the area I want to migrate to and found home prices very reasonable. I told hubby, we are **SPAM** in 10 years and moving. He just nods and says "ok honey". You never know, perhaps in the next few years they will change the laws for the maternal line and make it 1942?????
