Marra from Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi

Post by maggieb »

My great-grandfather, Rosario Marra, immigrated from Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Avellino, Italy to Clyde, New York. I believe I've found his ship manifest: Mar 30, 1896, on the Massilia, at age 26.

What I don't know how to do:
Obtain information about him prior to his immigration to New York.

If you have his exact birth date, or even the year with both parents names,
you can send a request to the town of origin.

Here is an interactive letter for this purpose:

Form Letter

You can also check for microfilmed records at the following site:

Catalog

These records can be rented and viewed at a center near you:

Locator

Film runs about 5.50 a roll, contains birth, death, marriage and banns if available. After the third renewal, or rental, the film will stay on permanent loan at that center rather than being shipped back to Utah.

Thank you for the information!
My problem is that I have no information about his parents names, etc.
I just know his name, age, and places and dates of immigrating

Before proceeding to Italian documents, you'll need to collect all US documents, this may reveal exact birthdate, name of parents and further confirm town of origin.
If you need any help in obtaining or researching records, members will be glad to pitch in.....IG has a great team here!!
Just provide his place of residence, spouses name, along with maiden name if known, and their children, birthdates would also help, even a year. :)

When you send the request, in Italian form letter, to the ufficio di Stato Civile inhis town of origin Sant'Angelo Dei Lombardi, Avellino province, Campania you should request his Estratto di Nascita which will contain his parents full names.
\The service is free the address to mail the form letter is located at www.nonsolocap.it and type inthe name of the town on top, click CERCA and when the town name appears with the zip code and province and rfegion, click right on the town name and a website will come up. Scroll down that website to MUNICIPIO and that is the address to mailyour rquest. =Peter=

Hello!
Perhaps some clues to help you track down your records in Italy

Looked at your probable 1910 census in Galen Twp, Wayne County, NY and noticed that Rosario’s 1st son James was born abt 1894 in Italy.

page 2

Checked for a possible manifest and found this one in 1898 with Rosario’s wife Rosaria & son Vincenzo (James)?

possible 1898 manifest

27 Jan 1898, SS Tartar Prince
Lines 16-17
Rosaria Pizzirusso 27, born abt 1870
- married
- last residence Sant' Angelo Dei Lombardi
- destination Brooklyn
- joining husband Rosario Marra at 475? President? Street Brooklyn
Vincenzo Marra 4, born abt 1893

Do these records look correct?
Thanks!
Valarie

edit: corrected the spelling of Rosario

Thank you so much, Valerie!!!
This is my great grandfather and his wife Rosaria!
I was confused about Vencenzo. But if that's James, then it makes sense!
I really appreciate your help!

Hello :D !
I’m so glad we could find the ship manifest for you.
Since in Italy women keep their father’s surname, Rosaria would have been traveling under her maiden name.
It was lucky that they listed Vincenzo with his father’s surname (they didn’t always)
Vincenzo was commonly ‘americanized’ to James, I believe it had to do with the Italian pronunciation of the nickname ‘cenzo’
Please let us know if there's anything else we can do to help.
Thank you for getting back to us!
