So this has been of interest to me for some time. I'm a U.S. born citizen, but have many relatives in South America who are also descendants of Italians like myself.
Here's the thing. I read on a website that you can get Italian citizenship as long as your ancestor left Italy after 1861 (Italy wasn't a country before then)
The other thing is that the ancestor had to have his children before giving the citizenship. I also read it doesn't matter how far back it goes... grandfather, great-grandfather, etc. as long as it was before 1861. Is that right?
Now my grandmother who is the daughter of Italians had her son before 1948. This is a problem because the law said Italian women could not pass on the citizenship if married to a foreigner, in this case to a South American.
But apparently the law just changed in Italy! Can anyone please confirm this? I read this off an Italian website, but my Italian is a little rusty.
Ricerca a cura dell'Avv. Vincenzo Romano

Please review this recent thread on this very subject.

In any case, it wouldn't matter because a woman could not transfer citizenship to a child born before 1948, and unfortunately, this has not changed. Sorry.
