Needing Help Finding Dantonio's

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Needing Help Finding Dantonio's

Post by tonij16102 »

Once again I'm stumped...I am looking for my grandfather and his family. The last name is Dantonio and no one seems to know exactly where the family is from some think Bugnara and others say Sulmona so I'm not sure. I have checked the manifests for Ellis Island and haven't found them but was told by my uncle that they may have come in through Boston.

What I do know is that when they first came to America they were in New Brighton, Pennsylvania. I'm also not sure if it was only my great-grandfather, my great-grandmother, and my grandfather or if it also included my great-great-grandfather and his wife. I was able to find at my local library the death reports in the paper but no mention where in Italy they were born or came from the same holds true for when grandpa passed away on his Death Certificate all that was on it was the name of his parents.

The names that I know are:

Eugenio Dantonio, his wife Vincenza and my wonderful grandfather Antonio Dantonio who lived out his live New Castle, Pennsylvania. Thanks for all the help that I have received from this wonderful forum and all of the wonderful people so willing to help.

Thanks again,
Toni

Hi Toni and Val,

I believe the correst spelling of the lastname was D'Antonio
Perhaps this is the 1900 arrival for Eugenio?

Laura :D
Hi Laura Yes this is the way it was when they first came to America in fact my mother's Birth certificate is spelled like this then by the time she went to school it was changed to Dantonio. Why? I'm not sure...but I think this maybe his father as I know they had cousins in Pittsburgh and no living aunts or uncles really knew where grandpa's family came from.

Thank-you, Toni

Hello Val Yes this is my grandmother and his mother and Freedom, Pa is nearby to New Brighton where they lived until my grandfather Antonio and my grandmother Marrietta Lostracco got married and then moved to New Castle, Pa. I have looked for a list with my grandmother and her mother on a ships list and could never find them Marrietta's mothers name was Filomenia Sylvestri or Sylvestr and was Bugnara. Where is this village where it says my grandfathers family was from? Is it in Sulmona?

Thank-you all I am very over-whelmed this morning,
Toni

Hello Toni and Laura!
Actually finding your records wasn't too difficult since you provided excellent information and feedback.
Laura is correct :D , they did live in Villalago and your grandfather Antonio stated he was born there on his 1942 card.
The 1906 manifest has Vincenza & Antonio's place of birth as Bugnara...
So a search for records should probably be done for both locations?

I am thinking that Vincenza may have been born in Bugnara but I will check both areas I have some family names for Bugnara with the Lostracco and Pasquale names listed.

Thanks so much everyone this means so much to me.
