Veltre family mystery, last name translation
Veltre family mystery, last name translation
My great grandfathers name is Isaia Veltre.
I sent off for a SS5 form with the name of his parents.
Here are the names of his parents, however I cannot read the last name of his mother. His mothers first name is listed as Elisa
Fathers last name listed as John. I have included links to photos.
Here are pictures of the mothers first and last name (Elisa)

http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt31 ... /Elisa.jpg
Here's a picture of theFathers name (John)
http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt31 ... /JohnV.jpg
My question about his father's name being John Veltre is this........... Is the Italian translation for John actually Giovanni
should I be looking for giovanni Veltre instead of John Veltre?
Heres a picture of My great grandfathers name. Isaia Veltre
http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt31 ... /Isaia.jpg
Thank you for taking the time to look.
So here's the mystery part. I got a letter from a relative in Italy who claims to be the sister of Isaia. Livio helped me to translate it. Here is the translation.
THE LETTER
I am the daughter of Maria Emanuel Veltre married Petrone and my grandfather's name was Giovanni Veltre and my grandmother's name was Lisetta Pennisi married Velter. And I am Emma the daughter who is answering to you and I am 82 years old but I live all day using an oxygen bottle because I do not breathe well but my mind is still lucid, dear Stella, my mother used to to say that I had a brother who was a barber and whose name was Isaia. My grandparents lived in Bagnara and when they died they were buried in the cemetery of Chianche where she was living, my mother was always visiting them because she was (lived) in Pietrelcina.
Dear Stella, I live with my daughter, and since she is working I have a woman looking after me. In the picture that you sent me the male looks like my brother.
I initali saw a brother (could be a friar) who is the son of Antonietta Chialignio, I wonder if you know him,
greet him, I stop writing and kiss to all
I am your niece (or granddaughter, nipote stands for both).
emma
My question is who is Emma? where does she fit in this picture.
Is the Giovanni Veltre she's speaking of actually the (John) Veltre in my photographs?
Here's a copy of Isaia's Draft registration card.
(thanks to you guys)

I listed a picture of Isaia's manifest record as his draft registration card.
Here is a picture of Isaia's orginal draft card

I also tried to take another picture of the entire SS5 form for clairfication.

Here are some more possible relatives (again from the Looking for Veltre family information, post) VJ located a couple of people that may be in some way related. One of them is named Maria. My grandfather remembered her and called her "Antoniette". Maria is more than likely the sister of Isaia.
Emma's letter also mentioned the son of a lady name Antionette. That he was a friar.
My grandfather told me that Isaia had two brothers who were priests in Italy.
Below is the information for the possible relatives.

Re: Veltre family mystery, last name translation
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. After reading your post several times, I understand that you believe rodrigo is actually rodger. The name rodrigo could have been a mistake? So isaia, rodger, christopher, and oreste were all brothers. That makes complete sense because isaia's son, john my grandfather, told me that his father came over from Italy with three brothers.
Do you have any clues to the spelling of Elisa's last name (isaia's mother)??
Do you have the address possibly of where I need to write for the family certificate?
Thanks for your help!

Re: Veltre family mystery, last name translation
Rodrigo was Rodger in a census and also had a son with Rodger first name ( born abt 1917)
the certificato storico di famiglia you can ask directly in Sant'Angelo Cupolo town (Bagnara is a hamlet of this town) Servizi Demografici officehttp://www.comunesantangelo.it/Ufficio%20Demografico.htm
here it are the email address, but I believe that for first thing you must ask what data are necessary to provide at officer abt the certificate... I believe that Isaia Veltre birthdate and parent's names are helpful, and you can ask 1 generation back, because however the certificate having a cost ( 2,58 euros for any name)...
also it are the possibility of to request it on line by agency http://www.homeonline.it/doc.cfm/60/cer ... 3wodBEyZQw
for a minimum cost of 49 euros (+ tax)
best regards, suanj

As stated by Emma, in the letter she wrote to you, Elisa's surname is Pennisi.StarV579 wrote:So does anyone have a guess on the spelling of ELISA's last name? Thanks star
Keep in mind that John=Giovanni and Lisetta is nickname for Elisa.
Emma is the granddaughter of John Veltre and Elisa Pennisi.
Re: Veltre family mystery, last name translation
Thank you both so much for taking the time to answer.
I guess my question is how would emma be related to me directly?
And emma said the spelling of the name was pennisi. The ss5 form said something like penonse. Which one is right and what part of Italy does the name penonse/pennisi come from?
Thanks

Hi Star,
try this site:
http://www.gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html
digit Pennisi in "Cognome" and you'll see where the last name is present in Italy..

I would say that the John Veltre and Elisa Pennese of the SS5 form are the grandparents of Emma.
Re: Veltre family mystery, last name translation
Thank you again. Is that a very common last name?
