d'alessandro, palmieri and itri families

Post by tessydales »

Hi there,
I was born in Long Island in 1914 from Italian parents but later moved to Italy and lost touch with my family back in the US.
I’m now trying to trace back my relatives in the US. I know some of them are called Palmieri and should be living in the NY area as my mother Carmela Palmieri had brothers and sisters (Emilia and Vincenzo) who were living there when she moved to Italy with brother Eliseo.
I also know some of them are called Itri and should be living in Philadelphia as my father’s sister, Carmela D’Alessandro, got married with someone called Itri and went to live in Philadelphia.
Unfortunately, I have no precise data. The only data I have comes from Ellis Island database, and it's only about my mother Carmela Palmieri.
Do you know if at the time (around 1900) there were other places where boats from Italy arrived and if there are any databases I can search?
Also, has anyone access to 1910 and 1920 Census databases to look for more precise info?
Thanks ever so much for your help.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Tessy

Hi Tessie I am also searching for Palmieri family. Do you know what part of Italy they came from? Also in the village of Camigliano, Caserta, Italy there are Palmieri there. My great-grandmother was Concetta Palmieri was from Santo Potito and settled in NY before moving to Pennsylvania, her mothers first name was Carmela beyond this I don't know much yet.

Hi Toni,
my family were not from San Potito, but I could see if I can get to know more by getting in touch with the San Potito municipalities, if you like. I would need more info, though, as Concetta and Carmela are quite common first name, and Palmieri is as a surname, too.
Can you access any databases (like the 1910 and 1920 Census) in the US if I send you more info about my family?
Have a good day,
Tessy

There is this 1920 census, but is only a possibility, as we need further clues to help identify the right family. Do you have birth dates for any of the names listed? What is the town of origin in Italy? What are the names of Carmela's parents?

Thanks ever so much for your help!
It is a possibility as age sounds possible (I don't have precise data) and I know for sure Carmela had a daughter called Teresa (which would have become Tessie as in my case).
The fact is I know she was living in Philadelphia when I was little (I was born in 1914), but she might have moved back to NY...Did you check the Census for NY or the US in general? Is there no trace at all of her maiden surname (D'Alessandro)? The town of origin is Campagna (in Salerno). I can't remember her parents' (my grandparets'!) names, but I'll try to get in touch with the municipalities in Campagna to get to know more.
One other D'alessandro in the NY area was Giuseppe, who married Filomena but had no children.

Any traces of Palmieri in the NY area?
Names:
Emilia - died when she was 23. Her son was called Tonino (Tony, Antonio, Anthony or the like). I don't know her husband's name.
Vincenzo - married Genoveffa. Lived in West Broadway. Had four daughters, one called Giuseppina.

I REALLY want to thank you SO much for your help!
If there is any search I can do for you from here, please let me know.

All the best,

Tessy

Thank you so much!
It sounds very likely. Do you think Vincenzo changed his name into James? Did people do that at the time?
I'll have a try with the website you mention.

Tessy :D
Here are a couple more census records, probably the same family.
James was one of the 'americanizations' of Vincenzo.
I believe it had to do with how 'cenzo' sounded to american ears  .
He may have used James at work to fit in...

Gosh! Yes Yes Yes!
I now remember Amelia and Rose in addition to Genevieve! It's them, definitely:
Vincent Palmiero 44
Genevieve Palmiero 42
Josephine Palmiero 16
Elizabeth Palmiero 15
Amelia Palmiero 10
Rose Palmiero 7
And YES, Giuseppina Luongo was Vincenzo's Mum. So Emilia's Mum, as well. So Emilia and her son Tonino DEFINITELY went to visit Emilia's Mum in Campagna!!!! I don't remember Naimoli, but Emilia was dead when I was born and I was born in 1914, so that is likely, too. I'll have a look at the documents now, and see what I can gather.
THANKS EVER SO MUCH!!!
Please get in touch if you find anything else!!!
Have a very good day!

Tessy, I'm so glad we could help :D .
Checked for obituaries for any Naimoli in or near Ocean County, NJ - looking for children's names.
No luck so far.

I checked the Eliis Island document, and it's DEFINITELY her, and the document says her husband's name was Michele Naimoli, so that's sure too, hence the marriage record is right. Not sure about the death record, as Emilia died when she was 23 as far as I remember, and the Ellis document says she was 23 in 1911, so she couldn't have been 24 in 1914. I don't know. I don't think there were that many Emilia Naimoli around, though.
Anthony was born in the US, so the naturalization document is not his. But the death certificate seems to be right: he was 6 months in 1911, so he was probably born in 1910.
Do you know what IPC Held for S.I. from TDR means on the Ellis document? Also, do I read that Emilia was a seamstress (I'm not used to that hadwriting).

Also, do you get to know if Anthony got married and had children I could get in touch with?

About this, instead:
Home in 1920:
329 West Broadway
Manhattan Assembly District 1, New York, New York

Vincent Palmiero 44
Genevieve Palmiero 42
Josephine Palmiero 16
Elizabeth Palmiero 15
Amelia Palmiero 10
Rose Palmiero 7

Do you get to know the names of the men the girls married and where they went to live?

I'm SO grateful, for what you're doing!!! Please let me know if there is something I can do for you!

Take care,

Tessy

Tessy :D ,
Here's my attempt at transcribing the 1911 manifest
It appears that Emelia went back to Italy in 1910 & that she probably had Antonio in Campagna
If Antonio had been born in the US it should have been notated on the manifest

Other than the possible Social Security Death Index for Antonio in Ocean county, NJ, I'm having no luck locating his family :?

For Vincenzo's daughters, since only Rose was still at home in 1930, perhaps we could try looking for 1930 census records with some possible husbands from the Italian Genealogical Group marriage records?

Back in a few hours :D

Hi Valarie,
thanks a lot for helping me understand these documents! Does the naturalization notation mean that Anthony was naturalized on arrival? So the 1940 naturalization document you attached before may be someone else's? Or was his mum just asking for naturalization then and Anthony only got it in 1940 (was it such a long process at the time)?
Thank you so much for looking into Vincenzo's daughters as well!
You're ever so kind!!!
I'll check my e-mail again before going to bed as my grandaughter (who's writing for me) will be away all day tomorrow. She will surely try to access the Internet but isn't sure we'll manage to.
Thank you SO much again for what you've been doing for us!
Have a good day,
Tessy
