Looking for information on Leba (lebo) Papalia

Post by Romano1970 »

Hi all,

When my Grandfather Lorenzo Romano came to this country Sept 23 1913 He came to the home or residence of his cousin Lebo (or) leba Papalia. Who resided at what looks like from the manifest for the ship SS Palermo to be 330 Passaic ave Passaic NJ.
Would anybody know of any more information regarding this person??

For reference, 2nd page of manifest, line 28
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/794/1913pg2ib4.jpg

I believe the name of his cousin is on two lines:
Cousin Papalia Seba
stiano
330 Passaic St
Sebastiano Papalia

Three others on the same page are joining this person, lines 17, 24 and 27.

Thank you Biff, I have been trying to research this as a Leba or Lebo Papalia. I thought that hook made that letter a lower case B.

Is there information available to show when this Lelia or Leba/Lebo came to America??

Hope you are doing well Biff.

HI again Biff. Very interesting. How were you able to decipher the first letter as an "S". Did they abbreviate due to the length of the first name??

Biff....nevermind my last. I see the "astiano" on the next line.

Very Good Biff, I never put that together.

Thank you very much. Now I will attempt to look this person up.

Michael,

The first name is spread out over two lines because the person doing the manifest wrote so big.
Seba
stiano

There are other instances on the page
Giu
seppe
Dom

If you look the word Self in column 15 you will see that the "S" is identical to the first letter of Sebastiano Papalia. Also the name Sebastiano was not abbreviated, it wraps on the second line, as Biff already pointed out

Biff, I apologize for jumping in...

Thank you both. Livio and Biff. The letters are a little hard to distinguish sometimes. Biff that name was on almost the first document you sent me over a year ago. So...it has been that long and I never looked to the next line. On ancestry when you pull up the name Lorenzo Romano it showed him coming to america to live with his cousin LEBA.... so much for translation.

Thank you both again.

On the downside to records on Ancestry and EllisIsland, there are a lot of transcription errors due to misinterpretation of the handwriting which at times is downright horrible. On the upside, where would any of us be without access to these documents.

Some of the errors for Italian names are obvious to those of us who have been doing Italian genealogy for a while, but quite frankly, I'd hate to see what I would end up with if I had to transcribe Polish, Galician, Ukranian, or Slovakian records with which I'm not familiar.

I've made it a habit of giving records a second look--manifests, censuses, etc. I've gotten so excited finding a record that I sometimes never take the time to check other passengers on the same page or other families living nearby, and it's only when I take a second look that I find other information.

Agreed, when you first sent me the manifest last year I was so amzed that I did not look at the whole thing. Now that I have had it for a while I have decided to go over ALL the documents that have been either given to me by the kind people on this site or what I have found on my own. Within the mainfest yo have atached to this page lines 8,16, 17, 24, 27 and 28 ( my grandfather) all ended up going to the same address in passaic NJ. This document alone is a treasure chest of information Some are cousins of my grandfather some are just friends. Either way there are 3 names that I will research as well.
Giuseppe Purrazzo
Filippo La (LO) mattina
Carmelo La(LO) Matinna
Salvatore Papalia
Giuseppe Papalia

There is a town that the Papalia's are from. It looks like, to me Barra Franca. Does that sound correct to you??

Yep, Barrafranca which is a little bit due west of Piazza Armerina.

If you check the Passaic County site natualizations, there are images for the naturalization documents for Salvatore Papalia.

Anytime, Michael. I enjoy giving a hand. Let us know if you need anything else.

Next time I'll be in the Middletown area, I'll PM you beforehand; maybe we could get together over a cup of coffee at the Colonial Diner.

Auguri,
Biff
