Merenda- Paterno Calabro

I was shocked to see something about the tiny town of Paterno Calabro - my family also hails from there.

I saw that there are microfilm records at the LDS church, how do I go about searching these?

My grandfather's parents were:

Salvatore BENINCASA (aka Samuel Benso) b. January 6, 1901 in Paterno Calabro
and
Antonetta PUGLIANO (aka Anne) b. January 13, 1907 in Paterno Calabro
married in Kansas

their parents:
Emilio BENINCASA (aka Emil Benso) and Santarella CARPINA (aka Santa)
Raffaele PUGLIANO (aka Ralph Pugliano) and Giulia FUNARO (aka Julia)


I have census records from Kansas and their Ellis Island records, just would like to trace back further than this if possible.

Thank you Riccardo - it makes sense now, but it's hard to believe that they even have these records from tiny Paterno Calabro on microfilm! It's exciting. I've called a few locations in my area to see if they have them, but I will probably have to order them for loan.

What can I expect to find in these records? How useful are they? My Italian may be rusty, but it seems to indicate a partical index. Do you search through the originals or is it more of a compiled listing?

I would like to know so I can accurately gage the time I may need looking through them.

Hi Eden,

What you have to do is go to your local Family History Center and order the microfilm. It now costs $5.75 per roll. On the film you will copies of the original Birth, Marriage, and Death Acts of your ancestors. It is in Italian, but you will be able to understand.

Some films have indexes while others do not, however, I will say the films for Paterno Calabro were nice films and the handwriting wasn't that bad.

Also, a good book to get is A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson.

If you find Cavello/Cavallo, Fortino, Apa, Fiorino, Savuto, Caputo,; let me know for I know information on some of these families.

My great-grandfather's name was Gaetano Merenda, he was born in Paterno Calabro. His brothers were Antonio and Francesco Merenda. I know that Antonio and Francesco Merenda emigrated to the United States. Several children of Gaetano married members of the Reda family and moved to Rogliano(cs).If someone need some information I am in contact with the family Merenda. None of them live more in Paterno Calabro, go there for holidays. The archives at the town exist only until the year 1905 Unfortunately, the previous ones were destroyed in a fire. However, there are copies in the Archivio di Stato of Cosenza.
