No records for Great Great Grandmother

Post by nmaritch »

Hello,
I am working on my family tree. I am having trouble locating any sort of documentation for my great great grandmother. Her name is Palma (molinaro) Aiello. She was born in Italy in 1884 and came to the US in about 1907. She had eight children who lived to adulthood, and she died in 1956. I have no immigration record, no death record, and no birth record. She was listed in the 1920 census as Polly Aiello. Can someone help me?

Hello Laura :D !
Thanks for finding 1920 - it was a tough one!
I think Sam's name was Salvatore
Born 3 Oct 1883
1918 WWI Draft Registration Card
Sam & Polly were probably married in Italy, so either one's manifest should help?

thanks for all the help. I had actually found this census, Salvatore and Palma were married in Italy, in Feb 1904 I have found his Ellis Island record listed as Salvatori Arello in 1905, but I still can't find any records for her either listed as Palma or Polly other than that census record.

NM, thank you for the update :D .
On your 1905 manifest Salvatore was headed to Chicago (not his 1st trip)
His last residence was Rende (Cosenza, Calabria).
Do you know if he and Palma were married in Rende?
Thanks!

Not sure if you've seen this record.
It appears that Rende CS may be the correct town of origin in Italy.
Here's a manifest with a possible relative of Palma's traveling to Racine, to the same address on Mead as Salvatore Aiello's 1918 WWI Card: 2134 Mead

I hope this helps. I found a record in Ellisisland.org of her arrival on 4/24/1910 inthe name of Palma Molinaro, aged 27 (1883 birth), single from Feroleto Antico, 88040, Cosenza province, destined to her father Vincenzo in Philadelphia Pennsylvania....Her intial manifest shows a line running thru it but several pages later another manifest shows up with same #19 with her admitted stamp..The facts mirror those of the person being sought and I wonder if there was a confusion with the lined out Pama Molinaro???? =Peter=

Here is some more information

Salvatore Aiello October 3, 1883 I am assuming born in Rende, ITALY.
Palma Molinaro 1884 Italy

Married February 22, 1904 in Rende.

He immigrated a year later to the United States.

This is the record that I found listed as Salvatori Arello.

She immigrated two years later.... I can find no record of this.

Their first surviving child was born in 1908 Gaetano, in Kenosha WI

They had four boys and four girls that lived to Adulthood.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1954.

Palma died in 1956. I have visited their gravesite.

Salvatore lived until 1971.

All of their children are deceased. Yolanda Pierangeli, the youngest child past away a year ago.

The family lived in the mead st area. I visited my Aunt Carm (carmella) greco their when I was small. She passed away in 1984.

I would love to find any information on Palma.

Eventually I would like to find out information on Salvatore Aiello as well, siblings and parents. As well as the same information for Palma.

My greatgrandmother Mary (Aiello) Ruffalo was one of eight and she married Charles Ruffalo who was the oldest of 17 children. I have a long way to go.

I have done some digging but because I now live out of state and all the children are gone it becomes more difficult.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Thank you for the additional details :D .
You may want to write to Rende for their marriage record (there's no charge).
Besides information on Salvatore and Palma, it will include their parents' names (it may also include parents' ages & occupations)

Research in Rende by writing to the comune:

Italian form letter generator with instructions:

Address:

Comune di Rende

You could also review your family’s records from Rende on microfilm.

Your nearest Family History Center has records for Rende (CS) from 1809-1910 on microfilm.
The cost is about $6 mo (rent), you’ll need to go to the center to order & view them.

From Palma Molinaro Aiello's obituary:

Palma's sister and brother-in-law?

1935 manifest
page 2

Santo Mandarino 49 (abt 1886)
- US citizen
- passport dated 1935
- (naturalization?) paper dated Chicago 1927

wife Carmina/Carmela Molinaro 46 (abt 1889)
- leaving daughter Gilda in Rende
- destination Chicago, Ill
- home 1923 Ohio Street
- born in Rende

Note: in the 1921 manifest (earlier post) Santo Mandarino is traveling with Francesco Molinaro - Palma's brother.

Thank you for the obituary. I don't have that in my records. My great grandmother was a great saver but not very organized. I have their 50th Wedding Anniversary clipping that is where I got some of the information. Two things confuse me. The date on her headstone says that she was born in 1884, yet her obit says that she was born in 1883? Is there a way to figure this out for sure? Also is there a reason that she wouldn't show up in the SSDI? Or in immigration records?

Thanks,

Hi!
Both the obituary and the headstone dates were probably dependant on a grieving family member's memory.
I'll bet that the 50th anniversary & her 70th birthday both occured in 1954 -since she was there to verify it :D .
Most Social Security records are found for folks who died starting abt 1962.
Can't find her manifest anywhere - that's why I was looking for siblings. I was hoping she had traveled with a family member. Best guess, her name is badly transcribed or illegible.
(and there's no doubt we have a lot of members looking for it!)
