Italian name and American name question

Does it matter when turning in documents if the first name is different. I will list what it says on each document. The line I am going through is my GGF Vinenzo Belpulsi.


GGF: Vincenzo Belpulsi
Bith Cert from Italy says Vincenzo Belpulsi
Marriage cert from Italy says Vincenzo Belpulsi
Naturalization record says Vincenzo Belpulsi

GF: Americo Belpulsi
Birth and death cert say his father is Vincent Belpulsi not Vincenzo Belpulsi
Mariage cert says Amenico Belpulsi not Americo Belpulsi


I have my GGM death birth and marriage record and on her death record it says her husband is Vincent not Vincenzo, also her death has her birth year one year off.

Does this matter and if so what do I do to fix it. I have until June 16 2010 for my appoinment.

Much will depend on where you have your appointment - which Consulate. Some are more difficult than others, but there is certainly an air of clamping down on ANY discrepancies at the moment on most Consulates.

Perhaps the safest way forward is to ask the consulaute for guidance on this matter NOW! Don't wait, as if they do require you to arrange for amendments it is often a long - and costly - process!

My appointment is at the Miami Consulate. I will try and get a hold of someone there. BTW is there any other road block I might encounter that is a common disqualification with the documents? I qualify it's just getting the documents and going through all of this to make it right the first time has been a real pain.

You can get some really good information and help on these questions from the Expats in Italy forum - "Expats Talk" >HERE<. Good place to start is on their 'Citizenship' board.. you could search for Miami Consulate and see what you come up with - you'll be surprised (I found 390 items!)... There are a lot of people there who have gone through their 1st apointments and are now dealing with any discrepancies (or not - as the case may be!).

I had just finished with Miami. They will only need direct line. GGF-GF-Father-You. I went through my paternal side so thats the only certificates they wanted. I did not need any death certificates. I would send them an e-mail about the first name but vincenzo to vincent does seem to be an americanized version. I am sure your GGF was the italian citizen. Remember Miami requires a certificate of citizenship for the Italian Citizen. This was the second form I was asked for . It went in this order.
Grandfahers Birth, Certificate of citizenship, Marriage, Naturalization, My fathers birth, His marriage , my Birth, My Marriage. hope this helps.

What is a certificate of citizenship? All I have are the following docs for my ggf. Birth marriage naturalization?

Mine was a letter from the town where he was born that stated his parents name, his birth date and at birth he was an Italian Citizen.

I have my GGF birth certificate from Italy and marriage certificate from Italy do you think I will need a certificate of citizenship. It has his parents names on the birth cert and he was born in 1883. I also have my GGM ( his wife) birth certificate from Italy. Should I bring that as well? I guess to be safe I could write the town and ask if they could send something.

You are more likely to need a certificate of citizenship if your ancestor never naturalized. If you have naturalization papers for him, that would indicate the date on which citizenship was lost.

Not to run this topic into the ground, this is my understanding

My GGF was an Italian citizen. He moved to the US and had my GF. Years AFTER the birth of my GF he was naturalized.

This indicates that the blood line was past down to my GF b/c he was born to an Italian citizen and therefor I do not need a certificate of citizenship for my GGF because the naturalization papers clearly show he was an Italian citizen at the time of my GF birth.

Then my GF passes the line down to my mother and to me. Is this correct?

Also I contacted the Miami consulate and they said that even though my GGF appears on Italian documents as Vincenzo and on American documents as Vincent this will not be a problem because the surname has not been altered.
