Family surname in question; Iannelli?

Post by StarV579 »

My family's surname is Veltre. My grandfather's name (that I have always known) is John J Veltre. After my grandfather John passed away, my grandmother was looking through a safe when she found a marriage document (he had been married and divorced before he married my grandmother) it listed his name as John Veltre also known as Victor Iannelli. We were shocked. I have no idea if the Veltre family is actually our family or if this is some attempt to "cover up" something.

My grandfather John J Veltre married my grandmother Cora La Nelle Gentry.

John J Veltre was born in 1919, in New Jersey, died in Bartow county georgia Feb 2009.

John J Veltre's father's name was Isaia Veltre born September 26, 1896 died June 1963. Isaia Veltre was born in Bagnara, Campania, Italy. Isaia married Mary Prosceno when he moved to the united states. Mary Prosceno's parents where John Proscino (Prosceno) and Concetta Lombardi.

My grandfather John always said that the family name 'Veltre" was changed when we came to Ellis Island. He said that it was shortened.

Please help me try to figure this out.

Let me know any documents you may need and I'll try to provide them.

Thank you very much.

Bagnara is not the actual towm (comune) which should be SANT'ANGELO A CUPOLO since Bagnara is a "frazione"(neighborhood or suburb of the town).

Go to www.tuttitalia.it/campania/95-sant-angelo-a-cupolo and scroll down to Municipio for the address to send form letters for the documents relating to ISAIA VELTRE's birth and death records with the dates you already have.

Further you can ask for a family certificate (Certificato di Stato di Famiglia Storico) which shows the date and place of birth of each family member in a form letter in Italian. You can send the form letter to the Ufficio di Stato Civile at the address listed under MUNICIPIO whic is free of charge for each document you wish separately.

Go to http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html

Once you establish the Veltre is the correct surname then you can start tracing the change.
