So if I got you right- you're supposed to hold down the Function key, type in the numbers (from keyboard, not above), then you type the letter you want the accent on ?

Is that right?
You also have to hold down the alt key.
My Italian surnames:

Caserta: Maietta, Rossano, Tessitore, Negro, Peluso, Musone

Campobasso: D'Andrea, Barile

Catanzaro: Fiorelli/Fiorillo, Romito

That didn't work either. Are you supposed to let go of alt and function when you type the letter? Well, I guess it doesn't matter actually because I tried both and neither worked.

You hold alt and function, type in the code, and then let go. For some reason, the A didn't work for me. Try the other letters, just so we can tell if it's a problem with that particular code.

Just tried the e. That one didn't work either.

This is really starting to get on my last nerve! I don't know why it's not working on my computer. It obviously is working for other people.

You could try this. Write the message here, then copy and paste it where you want it.

That link is great because you can do characters in so many other languages too- without having to figure this junk out!

You can cut-and-paste from the Character Map application or use it to figure out the ALT+### keyboard equivalent.

Or you can switch keyboards in software:
