Giuseppe Terizzo? Doy you think this was supposed to be Terrizzi which is the name I have? I know the location is sure correct. Pete Tripoli? I never heard that one. Is it possible that names, in those days, were the result of mistakes? If so how would you ever know?

Please dont quit on me now. Im too close.! You Valerie and Joyce please! I need your expertise. I need to do this for my daughter!! Please answer???
There is all too much to do with this. Can you ask me specific things you need to know and I will do what I have to to get the info. I found out an Aunt of mine, who I thought was dead is not. I have her phone number and I will call if you tell me exactly what you need. My Aunt is Rose who is the wife of my Uncle Joseph who is the son of Anna Terrizzi. She may hold the key at 78 years old. Please respond.

Hi Rick!
We're all still here.
Will reread thru what you have and see where we are.

The answers to your questions would only be opinion:

Giuseppe Terizzo? Do you think this was supposed to be Terrizzi
which is the name I have? I know the location is sure correct.

This would probably be a relation. Going to 'South Fork' isn't quite like
going to a larger city.

Pete Tripoli? I never heard that one. Is it possible that names,
in those days, were the result of mistakes?

The manifest would have been filled out before the ship left. Chances
are the information is pretty accurate. The manifest would be re-checked
upon arrival. Quite a few folks could not read English - so they would
have to verbally confirm the information. At Ellis they would most
probably be speaking with someone who knew their language.

If so how would you ever know?
More records confirming relationships.
Lucky finds - the same folks on a census with their relationship
to the head of the house spelled out.
More probable - ship manifests with folks joining the same relative
or leaving the same relative at home.
Some military records list relatives full names.
Obituaries are wonderful for spelling out relationships.
And of course birth and marriage documents.
And there are more!

OK?

Other opinions?

Valerie

We may be in luck. I found out one of my aunts is still alive and may hold the key information. She is the sister of Anna Terrizzi. we never knew them as they lived in California and we were out east. I will try her and get back to you.

Hope to get some information on the name Derrizzi.
Saw where it might have been Terrizzi at on time.
The only information I have on my father is he was a student pilot at Pensacola Navel Air Station 1956/1957.
The only name on adoption papers was Derrizzi as fathers name and thats all.
Any help by anyone would be cherished. As we are at a dead end and this is first new info in a while.
Thanks

Hi,

Just did a quick search on the pagine bianche (Italian telephone book).
To save you some time, the surname Derrizzi does not exist in Italy. However, Terrizzi does.

Most of these are listed in the province of Messina, Sicily, and of these, approximately 8/9 live in the village you mention.

So don't give up on the US side of your research - you need as much info as you can find before you do anything in Italy.

Hope this is of help.

Coming in late here but... My Mom is Nickolina Terrizzi daughter of Guiseppi & Grace Terrizzi. (My Grandparents)

Her sister was Anna (there are many sisters) Anna married Paul Tripoli. My Aunt Annie and Uncle Paul known to me. *smile*

So interesting to read their name changes, spellings etc.

So my cousin Bart must be your Father?! And the other name I heard used for Terrizzi was "Deritz".

Good job folks ..you amazed me!

I stumbled across this very old thread when I was doing some research for my son's fiancee, a 2nd great grandaughter of Giuseppe Terrizzi and Grazia Paone (great grandmother was Jennie Terrizzi). I too, was confused by the use of the surname of Deritz in the 1920 census for the Giuseppe Terrizzi family and this helped support that I did actually find the correct census. I did find a couple of interesting notes. When Rose, daughter of Giuseppe and Grazia, married in 1952, she named her parents with the Terrizzi surname but used Deritz as her maiden name. that's found here:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... cc=1804002
Also, in the Cleveland Press death notice for Guiseppe Terrizzi, there was another death notice on that same page, for Joseph Deritz. It read simply, See TERRIZZI, GIUSEPPE. Interesting.

One other note with Terrizzi / Deritz: check the naturalization records if you can find them. A former co-worker of mine from Poland changed his surname when he became a citizen; he wanted one that people could more easily pronounce when they read it or spell when they heard it pronounced. The surname change from Terizzi to Deritz may have reflected a desire to fit in to his new home area.
