Thanks so much for researching this for me. This information is from Bill Girimonte's website which is great, but it states Ignazio is from San Giovanni. San Giovanni has done research x3 for me and there is no record of his birth or marriage in that comune. I am now trying to search nearby towns such as Casino, and Caccuri.

Thanks again,
Lois

Just received what seems to be a negative reply re: my grandfather's birthplace, but just hoping someone might take a look(translate this as I am very poor in Italian) and tell me if there is hope--it seems to mention transmitting dollar so perhaps if I sent more $$ it might be there!?

"Si trasmette l'allegata richiesta per i provvedimenti di competenza, in quanto dalle ricerche effettuate, non risulta che la persone in oggetto indicatasia nata iin Catanzaro. Si allegano i cinque dallari trasmessi dal signor Lois Geremonte Angelo, cui la presente e' indirizzata per conoscenza. "

Thanks so much,
Lois

This was the response from Isola Capo Rizzuto where Ignazio's sister was born and I thought he might also have been born there. I sent it to:
Ufficiale dello State Civile, Comune Isola Capo di Rizzuto. Letter sent back to me had Comune di Catanzaro on the letter head and the envelope that came back had Municipio de Catanzaro on it.

Do you have the full address for Cosenza? I sent to Cosenza several weeks ago with no reply.

Thank you so much for your help,
Lois

Dear Lois, I think that maybe the birthyear of Ignazio is wrong... because IF the ship's manifest is right (Biff found it! great!) he was born abt 1854, and no in 1857 as in the censuses;
so please send this letter, also by email( Iknow that the archivist have much job, and maybe you must wait almost 1 month or more, but they reply you sure):

Archivio di Stato di Cosenza
Via Miceli, 67
87100 Cosenza (CS)
Italy

as-cs @ beniculturali.it ( NO Spaces)

Gent.mo Direttore,

.....................your name
.......................your complete and exact address
...............................your email
-----------------------------
The Archive let you know what they find, and what is the payment( normally photocopy cost and postage, so abt 4/5 euros) and what are the modalities for to pay; and after you will know anythging abt your ancestor, because what are the USA records could be no equal as in Italy and maybe he born in 1854 and no in 1857.....
Best regards, suanj

Dear Lois
Have you written to the Archivio di Stato in Cosenza. I have received many documents when requested. You must write in Italian and give them some specific requests, such as birth certificate and approximate dates?

You can also try the Family History libraries if you have one near you and check on familysearch.org if the comune has been microfilmed.

I know Cosenza well, my family is from there and I visit regularly

Suanj--Thanks so much for the information. 1857 is the birthdate on Ignazio's naturalization papers so I am assuming that should be correct. I will copy and send the letter right now. Thanks so very much again.

Jacqueline--I am still not sure of whether he was born in Cosenza or another area of Calabria. I have difficulty writing to comunes as I am not fluent in Italian. Do you mean the family history librairies that the Mormon Church runs? Thanks so much for writing.

Biff--Thanks again for finding the ship. I am contacting Ellis Island to make sure Ignazio Girimonte is recognized in their documents--not Sqoazio Ceremonte. This is wonderful for our family history.

Hi Lois, from ship's manifest found by Biff, you can read that the handwriting is Ignazio Girimonte; the initial "G" of surname is right on the ship's manifest... the name trascription is bad, but right... I know that the naturalization paper sying 1857, but I think ship's manifest correct, and usually in the US documents the data are no most accurate... by the letter in Archive the range is good, and I believe that they can find... regards, suanj

Suanj and langelo,

The credit for finding the ship manifest belongs to Valarie (vj) not me. And an amazing find it was.

Thanks so much for all the help. I am now re-sending requests to Cosenza, Reggio, and Catanzaro for the birth certificate with range of birthdates--1849-1857 as I thought the 1857 was a definite and learned here that perhaps it was not.

Suanj gave the Cosenza address. Anyone out there have the most accurate addresses for Reggio Calabria province and Catanzaro province to obtain the birth cerificate for Ignazio Girimonte.

Thanks again,
Lois
