I had to step away from the firehose for a day, but I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for their help this week!

My plan of action now is as follows:
1) scan all appropriate genealogical documents from my mother so I have access to them for easy reference (this includes marriage certificates, death certificates, etc).
2) get obituary for Pasquale from San Jose (in process).
3) get Henry's (Pasquale's 1st son's) Birth Record.
4) see if I can get access to the Italian conscription records at the LDS Family History Library (hopefully this is possible).
5) See if I can access some birth records for Nazole at the Family History Library (also hope this is possible).

Please let me know if you feel I'm missing something or am headed down the wrong path. Again, I wanted to thank all of you for your input & I'll be sure to post updates as they roll in.

OK, so I have a couple updates and was hoping for some more help... We now have Pasquale's Marriage Certificate and Obituary. They provided us with some more information: 1) Apparently, Pasquale had a mysterious sister (Maria Devincenzi) who also lived in Oakland, San Jose, or San Francisco at the same time Pasquale was there. She was mentioned on the Obit, as well as being a witness to his marriage in 1908. Unfortunately, although there are many Maria Devincenzi/Maria Bruno's, I can't link any of them to Pasquale, so this lead is proving to be a dead end.

I also went to the LDS Family History Library for the first time yesterday. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to have Italian military conscription records & you need to search by location which is of course the root of my problem in the first place since I'm guessing at location.

Peter, I would definitely be interested in seeking out provincial Army records - how would we proceed?

suanj, thanks so much for helping me along on the Devincenzi front - I didn't think to look at the potential childrens' birth & death records - I was solely looking for records on Maria Devincenzi or Bruno.

yes I understand,
but for to search a Maria DeVincenzi nee Bruno in California,
I searched abt the birth of DeVincenzi having mother with Bruno maiden name,

and I found only 1:
Edward A DeVincenzi born in Oakland, Alameda, CA, son of Provvido DE VINCENZI and Maria BRUNO..

so maybe this Maria DeVincenzi nee Bruno could be the sister of your Pasquale... that is all..

Erik, lots of threads here on obtaining military records (search "military records"). Unfortunately, you almost always need to know the subject's exact date of birth and exact place of birth to make this work.

I found Maria's crossing record on ellisisland.org. It's 100% her: Pasquale, San Francisco, crossing of 1901 - it all matches up. Furthermore, her last residence is listed as "Bobbio" Italy, which appears to be in Northern Italy near Genoa, supporting the story of Jenny marrying Pasquale, in part, because they came from the same region of Italy!

yes heidebock, must be the right person!

by Mormon's microfilms, it are also the Bobbio church records, 2 churches:

1. Registri ecclesiastici di Bobbio (Piacenza), 1575-1912 Chiesa cattolica. San Colombano (Bobbio, Piacenza)
and needing of to try in this microfilm abt the baptism( Battesimo)
Battesimi 1826-1876, 1838-1865 -- Miscellanea 1877-1882 -- Battesimi 1883-1893 FHL INTL Film
2161203 Items 1 - 4

other church:

2.Registri ecclesiastici di Bobbio (Piacenza), 1586-1912 Chiesa cattolica. Nostra Signora Assunta (Bobbio, Piacenza)

Battesimi 1849-1864 VAULT INTL Film
2160373 Item 1

if really Pasquale was born in Bobbio, it is possible that the baptism is in this last church...
If you have possibility of to try by Mormon's microfilms, this is the main and only way for to find...
Let me know your suggestions,
all the best,
suanj

suanj,

thanks for the microfilm information!

Also, it could be that I'm using the familysearch site incorrectly, but it seems that Piacenza military records are available on microfilm through the Family History Library. Please see the following link - am I misreading this?

https://www.familysearch.org/s/catalog/ ... u8TUc%253D

I'm guessing I would be looking at years 1875-1885 with emphasis on 1879-80? Do you think this would be a good place to explore as well?

thanks

For what I know the military documents are by birthyears, so you must search in this microfilm:
Ruoli matricolari 1856-1861 FHL INTL Film 1693497
because Pasquale was born in 1860; also it is possible that he was born no in Bobbio, because Bruno is not a surname specifically of Bobbio, however if Pasquale was born in the area you can find it in the microfilms, and no doubts because you have the birthdate, so when you will find, you will have no doubts...

All, I ended up finding the Military Record for Pasquale! I've been out of commission for a while with knee surgery, but finally made it back to the LDS FHL and found his record in Ruoli matricolari 1856-1861 FHL INTL Film 1693497!!! I was hoping for some help in deciphering the document, especially the name of his birthplace. It's difficult for me to read the writing, but it looks to me like his birthplace might be "Fascia" which is a town somewhat near to Bobbio. Do any of you agree/disagree?

Im attaching the record for open perusal and we're VERY excited! We never would have stumbled upon this without the help of the forum!
Thanks again!
