What do Italians eat for breakfast?

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

When I was young, I never understood why our family never had a hot breakfast together like the families on TV did. We usually had hot Ovaltine and toasted Italian bread, or buns and donuts on Sunday. I thought there was something wrong with us. It wasn't until my first trip to Italy in my 20's that I realized no Italians ate an "American Breakfast." What I thought was odd was merely a reflection of my family's culture.

By the way Elba, I understand why you don't make that recipe from scratch. It looked fairly simple til step 4. That's when I decided to use a ready-made dough.
