Hi Katrina,

The location in Italy is Termini Imerese in the province of Palermo in Sicily. The family migrated to Gabes Tunisia (N. Africa) then to america.

Can you give a little more detail on your exact connection to Sam (Salvatore) Virzi? Full names, approximate dates, siblings etc.

The information should be very useful for lilbees (original poster). Seems you two are related!!!

Hi

My name is Ann Marie Harp, I am Guiseppe Virgi's granddauthter. My mother was Mary Gloria Virgi. I dont know much about my mothers side of the family. She married my father who is black and the family, except for my grandfather, disowned her. They took her obituary out in the paper shortly after my father and her were together. Such a shame, oh well. I just wanted to write to say, i'm glad to see his name. He died before I was born, but from what i understand, he was a wonderful man. Rose Virgi was the only one who helped raise us after my mother died. Her married name was Rose Branson. Marie Virgi is buried in St. Mary's cemetary in pittsburgh pa. Her headstone is hand carved by my grandfather. My grandfather also came over here with his best friend who is named Johnny LaRocca. Johnny LaRocca and Guiseppe Virgi were more like brothers than friends. The had many businesses together from what I understand. I have heard through some people here in Pa that knew my grandfather that he had a cement business with Johnny. From what I understand my grandfather was very well respected. Never wore a suit from a store, all of his suits were taylor made and he never left the house without a suit on. Everyone in the community loved my grandfather. I happen to run across someone who could not believe he was my grandfather until I brought the rest of my brothers and sisters around. In this man's house, over the fire place, this man's mother kept a portorate of my grandfather. His mother was very old and remembered my grandfather well.

Thank you for posting. I have been working on the Virzi family for some time.

I do have a question. Was your Virzi (Virgi) family out of Illinois or Ohio? The families have the same names and yet are not related as far as I can tell so far. I only have a few records from Sicily and Tunisia Africa for the ones I am researching.

Could you tell me more about how Pennsylvania comes into this? I have no one in that area or have found any reference for that state.

Look forward to seeing another post from you. Let's see if there is any connection.

Looking over these posts, I guess I do have the wrong person. They have Mary one of his children listed as Mary Beatrice.. my mothers name was Mary Gloria.

From what i have heard about Africa, my grandfather and a few of his buddies used to travel over to that part every weekend to party with the ladies of the land. LOL.. it was only a short canoe trip and apprenltly they had fun.. LOL.

A few things that I have not explained maybe a little confusing. First, you may find it a little odd that my grandfather being so old would have a living granddaughter. My mother had me when she was in her mid to late 40's I was a very unexpected child. She died when I was 6 years old from cancer. Joe Virgi died in the 70's before I was born. I had a brother who my grandfather met and Greg was born in 1971 .I was born in 1975 and Joe died before I was born so he must have passed sometime between 1971 and 1974. My aunt rosie who died 3 years ago in her 90's would not speak about the family because of the disownment. We could not get any family history from her at all. She talked to 2 people who were related to us but would not let them know she was speaking to us so they would continue talking to her. I swear that part of the family is either severily retarted or ate too many lead paint chips when they were younger. The way they acted is ridiculous. If they only knew how successful we all turned out to be.. the joke is truly on them.

Also, I was not able to find where my grandfather was buried. I kept lookign for the name Virgi. I knew depending on what was going on at the time, he would often change the spelling of his last name from Virgi to Virga. I dont now any other variations. I bet if I called the catholic cemetary association in PA that keeps a log of everyone buried in their cemetaries and did a search under the name Virzi, I would find him
Unfortunetly, I do not know much about the family until after they came to PA. I can assure you however that my mother was Mary Virgi ( Virzi) and my aunt is Rosie Virzi. Because the family was not happy about my mothers marriage to my father, I never met the rest of them. I know my grandfather loved my father beacuse he took care of my mother. She never worked a day in her life and was home to raise 6 children in a beautiful house with everything that she needed. I know my grandfather aided in getting my father a job with the Pittsburgh fire department. He was the only black on the force. They also lived in a place where we were the only black/bi racial family in the neighborhood. We got that house because of Johnny LaRocca and no one dared to say one word to us because of who we were. But, the brothers and sisters of my mother, did not come around.I only remember 1 aunt being at my mothers funeral besides Aunt Rose and her name was Tony- she is in the family by marriage I believe. I also remeber 1 of my uncles being there.. his name was Anthony Merola. I still remeber how he looks to this day and could recognize him anywhere. My family came from Palarmo Sicily. I know that my grandfather had a lot of dealings with people in the OH, NY and PA area. He was pretty big in some organizations and had a lot of contacts in those areas.
