Now to find that census record I saw earlier ...
Raffaella..

I know this is a longshot but in your opinion, what do you think of the manifest above and about passenger 280? Carmenantonio Iorio it looks like to me?

Thanks suanj!

Well, I guess you have a decision to make Giovanni. I would take a chance and write to the address suanj gave you and see what happens. At worst, you will get a negative answer.

I guess its up to you now.

Hugs!

suanj wrote:Giovanni: for to write in Italy need of to know the right birthplace, so it is necessary other search steps... the marriage act... and also to find Carmine DI IORIO ship's manifest with Teresa wife... on the ship's manifest maybe it could be the first name: Carmine, or Carmine Giuseppe, or Carmine Giuseppangelo, no Carmine Giuseppe Angelo... but I believe only Carmine... just my suggestion....
grazie. it seems like Carmine's ship manifest is the most difficult thing to find. The marriage act I must research soon.

Iwas thinking the same about the name on the manifest... that it would be Carmine, or Carmine something, but not Giuseppe...

So are you both thinking that Carminantonio is Carmine Giuseppe Angelo Diorio?

Well..its possible but we won't know for sure unless you write away for his records. He is next to Teresa and the ages would work. You should also write away for her records. Maybe suanj can offer her advice?

Also, I must know what resources you all use. I haven't subscribed to Ancestry.com, or any other, because I don't trust them. But what you tell me what you use, then I must subscribe to.

The things you have found for me I could not find, before.

So per piacere, tell me what you use!

Grazie!

There are several sites available on the internet, and some of them are free..others like ancestry are not.

The secret is playing with the various options. I am a big fan of ancestry because its convenient but its not the be all end all. Sometimes the same info is available else for free.

Have you tried google the surname and checking out people's home pages as well? Sometimes people transcribe records..

My favourite sites..

Webpages by Steve Morse

Family Search Website

Cindy's List

Footnote

For New York Records I believe the ladies gave you quite a few links. Have a look through them and see how they work.

I just thought of something..

If Vincenzo was in the War, then there should be a record of his army papers somewhere. I think they would include the parents names and the place they lived. You could write away for them as well.

I was wondering about that too. I guess I could contact the Italian Army to start. (Esercito Italiano)

Also, didn't we find Vincenzo's birth record? Can't I contact NYC for the actual record, which should have his parents and their towns of origin? Doesn't the info we found here on his birth have referrence to the record?

OK, so i can almost assume this is my great grandfather... Vincenzo's father. Doesn't this mean that original name WAS "Diorio", and not "Di Iorio"? Maybe the names on records get changed up because of miscommunication of some sort? It makes it very difficult to decide on whether it was "Diorio" or "Di Iorio"... based on all the different records we've seen. Maybe the birth records are the most accurate, and Ellis Island being the least accurate?

Who knows what the name was changed to! I only posted it to show you the options. You still need to collect all records to confirm..
