Dominico Masciarelli

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Dominico Masciarelli

Post by GGG »

This site was very helpful in finding family members from my father's side of the family, ie: Prestianni--Lapiana.

Now I am searching for mother's side of the family. I know mom's father was
Luigi Masciarelli, (born in New York), married Carmella Romano, (born in New York), married in Yonkers, New York, USA. in 1916.

From my research, Luigi's dad, Dominico Masciarelli immigrated to New York with his son, Francisco in l887. Frank was 4 years old at the time. I have absolutely no information regarding a mother and or wife.

On the US Census for 1910 Frank "Marsh" is listed as head of household with 5 brothers. Along with Frank is Louis, Joseph, Nicola, Antonio and James Marsh. No mother or father listed.

May biggest frustration is the many spellings and misspelling of the surname Masciarelli and the simplifying the surname to Marsh. I suspect a home town for Dominic and Francesco might have been AGROPOLI, ITALY.

Thank you, in advance, for any information you might have in my quest to find Dominico's home town, his family background, mother of Francesco. Thank you again.

Hello and welcome! :D

If you know that Luigi was born in NEW YORK, and married in Yonkers, NY, then his birth and marriage record should have the names of this parents, and their place of birth.
Do you know if Luigi was born in New York CITY?

To request records...
Marriage

Birth

If Luigi applied for a Social Security Number...you can request his SS application which should have the names of his parents and their place of birth also...

Likewise for Frank (Francesco)...

Do you have an approx. year of birth for Domenico?

On what ship did he and Francesco (Frank) arrive in 1887? Port?

Where were they living in 1910 - Yonkers?

Hi T, thanks for your reply.

I have nothing on Dominic. The first clue I had to his name was when I ordered the marriage license for Luigi where he stated his father was Dominick and mother "unknown". Nothing else.

For Frank--on the 1910 US census he states 1887 was immigration date. No point of entry or ships name.

I will research more into getting S.S. and birth certificate from the links you sent, the difficultly being they used different surnames for different documents, ie: marriage Luigi went by Louis Marsh and for draft registration he went by Luigi Masciarelli. Luigi died at a young age of about 26 and I am also unable to find death documents because of the different spellings.

Ancestry.com has been my guide for 2 years now. I will climb over this brick wall I have hit and I will keep on looking.

Thanks again, T

Just curious....
I suspect a home town for Dominic and Francesco might have been AGROPOLI, ITALY.
How did you arrive at this determination?

Also, do you know what occupation Domenico was involved in?

Hi T.

I feel lucky to know Dominico's first name. I have absolutly nothing else on him thus far.

Through Ancestry, I found that distant cousins listed Agropoli, Italy as their home town, so I thought that could be a starting place for my Masciarelli side of the family before coming to America. How would I be able to search for people in Italy??? Are there any websites???

I no longer have family contacts in New York to ask these questions.

Thank you for your time, I will keep searching. I am sure one day I will get some of the answers I am looking for.

Very few comunes have online records available.
I checked Ancestry, and there are no records for Agropoli.

Your best bet at this point would be to order and view the microfilms available at your local LDS (Mormon) Family History Center. They have microfilmed the civil registrations (births, marriages, deaths) of Agropoli (Salerno) for the years 1866 - 1929.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... i+Agropoli+++

You will need to go to the nearest FHC to order the films, then return there to view them when they come in...

To find the nearest FHC

You can also write directly to the comune of Agropoli to request Domenico's or Francesco's birth record ...
Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Repubblica, 3
84043 Agropoli (SA)
ITALY

You will need to write your request in Italian...

Here is a website I used to trace my family from Agropoli. I don't see your family's name listed there so maybe they were not from Agropoli but another town near by.

I believe that your ancestors coming from Abruzzo region, Chieti province especially ...

Hi, You are right about Abruzzo region. I believe Concetta Marchietta (maidian name) is spelled correctly. Concetta and Dominic would be my great-grandparents. Yes, I believe you found my Masciarelli-Lapiana family tree on ancestory.com. Since my original post in May, 2011 to this site, I have been able to find a good amount of information. I am not yet familiar with the Mammarella surname. Thanks again for your reply, any help is most appreciated. GGG
