Surname commonality
Surname commonality
A few years ago there was a site which listed the most common surnames in each providence of Italy for the 1800s and earlier, but I can't find it now. Can anyone help me out? I'm aware I can google it, but what's most common now may not be what was most common back then. I'd like something that tells what was popular then.

Does that site return historical counts or contemporary counts?

The information is based on current demographic data rather than historical records.darkerhorse wrote: 16 May 2024, 16:23 Does that site return historical counts or contemporary counts?

That's what I thought. I think historic information is desired by this poster.lewisch wrote: 20 May 2024, 10:47The information is based on current demographic data rather than historical records.darkerhorse wrote: 16 May 2024, 16:23 Does that site return historical counts or contemporary counts?

Fantastic resource! It looks like you could find exactly what you're looking for on that website. Seeing how surnames have changed over time in various Italian locations is intriguing!MarcuccioV wrote: 16 May 2024, 04:27https://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.htmlescape road gamelyn1982 wrote: 15 May 2024, 14:34 A few years ago there was a site which listed the most common surnames in each providence of Italy for the 1800s and earlier, but I can't find it now. I think this is an estimate based on last phone books including ALL subscribers, before privacy laws that allowed people not to be mentioned (start of the 1990's).
