That's difficult to say given that Italians are born bilingual - they can speak with their mouth or their hands.

I would expect foundlings raised in institutions (or by middle to upper class adoptive parents) to be better educated than children in general.

Thats a good point about the instution or adoptive parents being middle or upper class. I just checked the Mastracci sons manifests though and they weren't able to read or write. Which is very odd cause that indicates my ggf maybe wasn't raised by them .....but then why call one his "cousin" on his manifest, and why name several of his children their family names?

Another question - any idea why a child would be listed as parents unknown on their birth and marriage, yet their parents would be listed on their death cert? Cause my 98cm DNA match has a foundling in the line we seem to match on - and oddly enough her parents are listed on her death cert - and are an actual couple, who I can find in records and had children before and after her birth. I'm fairly confident they are her correct parents as I seem to have matches on both their lines. The parents were unmarried at her time of birth but had a previous child whose birth record they were on. They then married a few years after her birth. I have both the birth record for her brother and the marriage of their parents - they occurred years apart. she's too old to be my ggfs sister and probably not his mother, but it just strikes me as odd.

Theres a Salvatore Rizzo born Salvatore Rizzo

whose the brother to the 98cm DNA matches ancestor but it says he married Frencesca Longo. Perhaps hes a cousin to the one in the manifest.

I was looking for Salvatore Rizzos marriage in Grotte and I instead found a marriage of a Domenico Salvaggio to a Rosaria Rizzo. His father is Salvatore and It looks like Mayante for his mothers maiden name. Her father is Pietro and her mothers maiden name I can't make heads or tails of.

I think this is that Antonino Salvaggios manifest, the one born in Ceccano. Theres a Mastracci on the same page, crossed out, but I assume they weren't traveling together or would be listed next to each other. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... n&groupId=
