Ideas for finding lost marriage records

Post by gs888 »

I am looking for the marriage record of my great great grandparents who lived in Villalba, Caltanissetta in 1886. They were Loreto Runfola and Antonina LaTone.

This was the year that they had their first child, in January 1886. But surprise!--they weren't married yet!
I found the church marriage banns from September 1886, stating that the couple had caused a scandal, and would be married before the end of the year. But I am having difficulty finding either a church or civil record of that oh-so-important marriage.

The parish of St. Joseph in Villalba says that their records from before 1891 are missing (I have only seen the banns digitally on FamilySearch-- and FamilySearch does NOT have church marriage certificate scans, only marriage 'allegati').

Likewise, the Comune does not find a record of a civil marriage for the year of 1886. And looking through FamilySearch scans also yielded nothing.

I have the extract of the groom's birth record, but there appear to have been no 'annotations' (notes on the birth record, which were added later, and note marriage status, etc.) :(

I am requesting a look at the bride's birth record, for annotations, as well as writing her home commune Church to ask them if they have anything-- but seems like a long shot.

Any ideas about where I could find Church marriage records for Villalba from 1886? :?:

Antonia Latone was born in Campofelice 9/9/1864 and Loreto Runfola was born in Valledomo 6/3/1860 and ancestry.com has 1886 marriage records of Villalba didn't see a marriage record on there if Calogero was married in Italy might show the information on his marriage act
Might also check the towns of Campofelice and Valledomo marriage banns

Which Calogero do you mean?-- Loreto's father Calogero was married in Valledolmo.
Calogero (Loreto's first child) did not marry in Italy.

Do you mean check the Church banns in those two towns?--or are there civil banns?

Thanks for the help!

I thought maybe Calogero his child married in Italy. Did he have other kids marry in Italy they would have info if they did on his marriage record. Sometimes the couple gets married church and years later get married civil Check the towns of Campofelice and Valledomo for the civil marriage publication on familysearch
I see the first Calogero Runfola died and they renamed another baby Calogero in 1880 Mar 31st if you didn't know it

Hi Marty,

Thanks for your help again! I have looked through Campofelice and Valledolmo civil records, and did not find the marriage records. I have a hunch that they were only married in the church. The banns I found include a letter from the priest in Villalba, requesting the requirement of civil marriage be waived, as the couple was too poor.

Do you know anywhere online that has scans of church marriage records from Villalba, circa 1886? I only see the banns on FamilySearch, no actual marriage records.

Cheers!
