Guedenzio "Lorenzo" Giamalva

Post by giamalvagambino »

Hi,

I'm new to the site and have been doing a LOT of family research. I always seem to lose the link once I get to Italy. I have found some information on my Gambino side, not much stretching after they came over from Italy to the States, but I don't have as much information on the Giamalva side. This is what I know:

Guedenzio "Lorenzo" Giamalva
Born: 23 Aug 1873
Died: 16 Aug 1943
Buried at Saint Matthew Cemetery (St. Louis, Missouri)

Married to

Leonarda "Leona" Gianusa or Giannusa
Born: 8 Oct 1880
Diet: 29 Jan 1955
Buried same place as Lorenzo

Had the children of:

Natale Giamalva b. 4 Oct 1907 D. 28 Aug 1975 Married to Mary Gambino

Anna Giamalva

Lena Giamalva

Dora Giamalva b. 21 Jan 1961 Married to Alfred Bertold

Josephine Giamalva 29 Aug 1911 D. 16 Jul 1998

Ben Giamalva B. 29 Jan 1914 D. 9 Sept 1989 Married to Ida M. Genre-Bert

Carol Giamalva

Joseph Giamalva B. 27 Oct 1921 D. 16 Jan 1990

Any information would be appreciated.

Giammalva (or Giambalvo) and Gennusa (or Gendusa or Giandusa) are western Sicilian names mainly found in southern Palermo province (such as Chiusa Sclafani or Bisacquino), or, in the case of Giambalvo, northwestern Agrigento (such as Santa Margherita) and parts of Trapani. Gambino is more common and widely dispersed, but is also predominantly western Sicilian. Alcamo is in Trapani, next to Palermo, but a bit north of where these names are usually found.

It looks like "Gaudenzio" to me.

There's an Antonino Giammalva from Alcamo 2 lines down, but he's going to meet his brother Francesco in New Orleans.

Unfortunately it seems that Alcamo birth records are not yet online, and the marriage and death records that are online begin in 1910. You could try writing to Alcamo's Stato Civile office requesting the birth records of Gaudenzio Giammalva and Leonarda Gennusa using the dates that you have above. The dates might be a little off or perhaps they were born elsewhere and only resided in Alcamo, but it's worth a shot.

I'll give that a try. Anything to know where they might be from or more information from the "home country". I know this might not be the forum to ask this but why would they have dropped an "m" in the name after a while? All the records I'm finding he signed he had it "Giammalva" . Was to just Americanize it a little?
