Gammaro family
Hi All,
I'm looking for information about my great grandfather, Samaritano Gammaro Domenico born in Italy around 1876, immigrated to Sao Paulo at unknown date (maybe 1888), married to Rosa Muglia in 1902 in Sao Paulo, died in 1921. My grandfather Salvador Gammaro was born in Sao Paulo in 1904.
I need to find the information about city and birth date of my great grandfather which is a mistery to be resolved and will be used for my italian citizenship.
This is all the information I have so far:
Name: Samaritano Gammaro Domenico or Samaritano Gammaro or Samaritano Gamaro or Samaritano Gammero
Father: Salvatore Gammaro
Mother: Samaritana Gammaro
Born around 1876
Immigration to Sao Paulo Brazil before 1902 maybe 1888
Married in 1902
Died in 1921
Hope to hear back from you, I researched everywhere I could find but I'm out of options now.
Regards,
Cesar

Re: Gammaro family
No doubts that they are the right parents of Domenico Gammaro, and he effectively went in Brasil on 1888; but no the his mother. I cannot find the her death act in San Lucido. I believe that Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro and Maria Carolina moved in other town after the marriage and here was born Domenico.. Maria Carolina surely died young and the her husband and son went in Brasil... Domenico could be born between 1879 and 1880, but where...

Re: Gammaro family
Hi Suanj,
Thanks for all the info but are you sure this is the one? I'm not sure because there was one document in Brazil that refered to his mom being Samaritana. But yes that could be wrong however all documents in Brazil refer to him as Samaritano Gammaro, and a few of them relate to him as Samaritano Gammaro Domenico, so this name SAMARITANO must show somewhere.
I have used the following website also for my research which claims to be the ARCHIVIO DI STATO DI COSENZA, and I did find Salvatore there but not sure if this is the right Salvatore still, nor any references of Samaritano Gammaro Domenico.
http://88.59.143.158/ascs_web/index.faces
That website have a the following record.
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680258
Ufficio Leva della Provincia di Cosenza, Enlistment year 1853.Volume number 25,
document number - page 247 section -
Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro, enlisted on --/--/----
born on 04/04/1853 to SAN LUCIDO
son/daughter of Francesco Gammaro and of Rosa Verre
I really need to find the the birth record of Samaritano Gammaro Domenico otherwise no citizenship and no connection to Salvatore.
Regards,
Cesar

Re: Gammaro family
Hi,
Samaritano don' t exist. Or Samaritana. It is a mispelled surname... The italian surnames are very mispelled... I am pretty sure that my find is right. I also searched in Cosenza archive, and at part Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro leverage, nothing abt Domenico, because the database is no complete, so said me the Director, and no updated.
Abt San Lucido civil records, i no found Domenico, however you can search by yourself, from 1879, and then to search also in the other Communes, because I am pretty surethat the parents moved in other town...

What do you mean by "Samaritano doesn't exist"?! It is a common name in Agrigento province. I've seen hundreds of people with that name in Ribera.
My 3rd cousin Giuseppe Samaritano died at Dogali and his name is carved on the monument at the Piazza dei Cinquecento.

Re: Gammaro family
Suanj, you say the mother, Maria Carolina did not go with the husband and son to Brazil and that she died young but you did not find her death act in San Lucido so possible she died in another town but where and when? Is it possible that she was abandoned by the husband and son who went to Brazil and changed their names so the husband could marry another woman in Brazil even though he had a wife back in Italy? It would not be the first time we have seen this. I would think that when you say Samaritano doesn't exist, you mean there is no Samaritano Gammaro in the town of San Lucido. I would be interested in knowing the outcome for a descendant trying to obtain Italian citizenship through an ancestor who changed his identity after he left Italy, if indeed this is what happened.
Re: Gammaro family
Hi All,
Thanks for all the inputs. I did find another record of a possible brother of Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro (same mother and father). Maybe that can lead to find something?
SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680258
Ufficio Leva della Provincia di Cosenza, Enlistment year 1861.Volume number 64,
document number - page 99 section -
Antonio Fortunata Gammaro, enlisted on --/--/----
born on 09/08/1861 to SAN LUCIDO
son/daughter of Francesco Gammaro and of Rosa Verre
Also I know about the following entry in an accommodation for immigrants in Brazil, date 24/02/1888, not sure if it is them but possibly.
http://www.inci.org.br/acervodigital/up ... 08_117.pdf
It is a man, 34 yo in 1888, with his son, 10 yo, Salvatore Gammaro and Domenico Gammaro. "Estado" says C for casado (married) and S for solteiro (single). So if it is them, Salvatore didn't change his name, declared himself married, but still, where is the birth record of Samaritano Gammaro Domenico and what date?
Same date 24/02/1888 Giovanni Gammaro was in the accommodation, not sure if they were part of the same family but posting it anyway.
http://www.inci.org.br/acervodigital/up ... 08_118.pdf
Thanks guys really appreciate the help!

Re: Gammaro family
Oh, it is important to say that even though the name Samaritano for my ggf is present everywhere, name Samaritana his mother was only present in the marriage of Samaritano in 1902, however this was declared by other people so there is a high possibility this is wrong as they didn't know the name of his mother and declared Samaritana just because. So it is possible indeed the name of the mother is Maria Carolina. Maybe Sammarco her last name turned into Samaritano? and his name was Domenico Sammarco Gammaro?
Samaritano Gammaro Domenico had 3 children, all their birth records refer to him as Samaritano Gammaro or Samaritano Gammaro Domenico, and none of them have the name of their grandmother, grandfather is mentioned as Salvatore Gammaro.
To my italian citizenship I need down the road.
ggf - birth (missing), marriage, death (missing)
gf - birth, marriage, death
father - birth, marriage, death
me - birth
Currently I'm missing birth and death of my ggf, birth being the most important.
Thanks for helping me solve the mistery.

Re: Gammaro family
oh, one more thing, when Samaritano Gammaro Domenico married in 1902 age 26, his marriage record says mother and father were dead already.

In same trip also a Sammarco.
I don' t know if Maria Carolina died in Calabria or went in Brasil later, io don' t know. I don' t know where was born Domenico, I no found the birth record in San Lucido.
Just I wrote that, second my idea, the Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro found is your ancestor, very probably, and the his wife seeming Sammarco.
Now second my opinion this is your ancestor, and anyone is free to think differently. I think that he was born in San Lucido, Cosenza, Calabria,IT.
What was his life after the marriage I don' t know. Just, having made many searches in Cosenza province, I can say that was usual that a farmer, no landowner, moving in different town, with wife, because hired by a landowner, to work, and so the family' s life was in this other Commune. Also my grandmother had similar situation, and many her siblings were born in different birthplace.
So I repeat, and I mean Calabria region: that the marriage record found could be of your right ancestors; that Maria Carolina maiden name is Sammarco on the record. That I am positive abt the spelling, because I found just a Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro, but married to a Sammarco no Samaritana/Samaritano and this surname, don' t existed in Calabria region at this time, and maybe also currently, I don' t searched abt that. That in San Lucido I cannot find Domenico birth. I am positive abt the arrival, but I cannot find in same trip Maria Carolina. So maybe she arrived later, or died, who know, I have no idea if her destiny...
so, anyone here can help us in the search, and any help is welcome!
