Re: pugliese???
It's a common surname throughout Italy so you won't be able to narrow it down based on the surname alone. But in Italian it means someone from the Puglia region of Italy.

In a book I own, there is a picture of Serafino with his mother and another picture of just Serafino. They're B&W photos in a copied book, but they are a start in case you have never seen them. You can private message me with your email and I can scan them for you.

Re: Death records for people who died at sea?
It depends on if the family registered the death despite it not being in the town. If they did, the record would be included in the "Parte II" section of the year, which are supplement records found after the records of those who died in the town "Parte I" Usually these records were entirely ...

They might not have been legally married...meaning their marriage was not registered at the civil level but only performed in the church level. (Or they weren't married at all.)
Do you have a marriage record for them?

Re: Carmine Rocco Lucchetta
I'm glad the trip turned out well! I'm also glad you could find your ancestors and appreciate the history. I wish more people would visit southern Italy, especially their ancestor's homeland.

Re: Going the extra mile
The purpose was for taxes/land registry but it is a complete census, not just head of household or male census. As Italy lacks censuses and it's hard to get church records, this is one of the best (and overlooked) resources out there for Italy in the 1700s, as it lists every inhabitant of the town ...

Re: Going the extra mile
The original copies of the catasto are in Naples. If someone has researched the catasto it would be microfilmed. If it hasn't been searched, the archive will microfilm it as the conditions of the originals are so poor. I don't know for sure but the state archive of Avellino might contain a microfilm ...

The town that came up from that link is Maddaloni. Is that the right town? The catalog shows that the processitti are there, just some are in the FHL vault. Did your ancestor who was born in 1811 get married in that town?

Re: Ricchio Family
Not related but know of the family:
Raffaele married Aquilla Tenuta in 1872 in Marano Principato. Their children were born in Cerisano, Calabria, Italy. However, the family moved to the town of S. Vincenzo la Costa, where most married and had children themselves.
