Re: Badarocco/Badaracco
Mariemaye, one of my best friends has the last name Badaracco and he is VERY involved in his Italian ancestry... he even went back to the original village (the name escapes me) and met his relatives!
He was born in NJ, most of his family is in NJ... if you would like I would be happy to put you in ...

Re: NYC Marriage Certificate INFO
Word of caution - don't take the marriage certificate as the final authority on name spelling. On my great grandparents' marriage cert, the husband's name was spelled two different ways, his sister in law's name was butchered, and my GGM's name had the wrong vowel at the end. Great sources of info ...

Re: Need help reading image from ship manifest
Wow - thanks so much!!! So impressed that you found the original image!!!
Looking back on it... Michele in 1920 has a wife on the census named Mary... so that makes sense. I cannot confirm her maiden name... looks like Cioffoletti. Cioffoletti makes more sense than my original guess of Ciaffoletti ...

Re: Sicilian Language origin and Frederick 11 Holy Roman Emp
I have a Masters degree in Linguistics. One of the things we learned in grad school was the truth of this saying: "A language is a dialect with an army."

Need help reading image from ship manifest
Hi all,
The image below is a section of my great grandfather's ship manifest. It is from the column which lists the name of their nearest friend or relative in their home country.
For this, I am pretty lost. The handwriting is TERRIBLE.
What I know is that there are three sections (my GGF and ...

Re: Spanish Influence?
It is possible that way back, you have Spanish roots. But also consider that way back then, the Spanish and Italian languages were different than what they are today.

Re: Teaching English in Italy - realistic?
I wonder why? =Peter= It's much less paperwork for anyone in Italy to hire an EU citizen. I have also been looking to teach English in Italy. The only realistic chance, in my opinion, for an American to work there is at a university. For any other school, it is really tough to get a good job ...

Re: re:ignoti genitori in messina sicily
I agree, those who were the most defenseless and innocent, the children, were the ones who bore the heavy burden of stigma that was associated with illegitimacy.
Interestingly, my grandmother never spoke of any of this. She loved her parents and her two brothers very much, as far as she was ...

Re: Italian Names
Moise absolutely = Moses. The modern French has two little dots over the "i" and no accent on the e. Modern Italian has no "i," but an accent on the e. Anyway, since this is 160 years ago, I wouldn't expect it to match modern spellings. Cool middle name!
