Help with word Cantoniero?

Hello, on my GGrandfather's atti di Matrimonio it lists his occupation as "Cantoniero". And on his first childs Atti di nacita it says "Cantonicy". My search so far came up with a possible translation as "Roadman" ??? any help would be appreciative. Thanks
