Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

What date of birth did Vincenzo's naturalization papers have? 23 Feb 1892 or 1 Oct 1894?

You wouldn't by any chance be trying to claim citizenship jure sanguinis through him, would you? Are you descended from one of his children born before the naturalization?

His papers had 1 Oct 1894, but ...

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

I learned that my late great aunt had some papers with history she'd written down and given to my aunt. She said that James' father's name was Sebastian and his mother's was Dameanna. My great-grandfather struggled with English all his life, and on his arrival papers, it says he couldn't read or ...

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

I now think that this is, in fact, his birth record. I can't read it to save my life. Is there anyone who can translate it for me?

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

The Gennardi surname (with two n's) was found in the town of Mussomeli in Caltanissetta, Sicily in the 1890s. There is no Vincenzo born there in 1894 though. Quite a distance from Patti. The online Patti birth records jump from 1893 to 1896, but the surname there is Gelardi.

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

So it may be that the census record for Sebastian Genardo is for a different person. But that's not what made your uncle think that James Genardo's father was named Sebastian, right?

I note that the Sebastiano Genuardi that was the father of the Vincenzo born in 1892, was 50 years old at the time ...

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

That marriage record on Ancestry that you found is for a marriage index in Cook County, IL (i.e., Chicago). The date was 29 Nov 1922. Serial number 0965825. You could order the marriage record - it might have the parents.

I've found a record of a Sep 1913 passenger manifest (grouped with border ...

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

I'm not 100% sure on Sebastian. But, Dameanna is my grandmother's middle name. She says she thinks it came from her grandmother (James' mother). On my uncle's tree, he has one source, the 1930 census, attached to Sebastian's profile. The record he has attached gives Sebastian a birth year of 1883 ...

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

Someone (Robert Choate) has a tree on Ancestry for him and Josephine Schelfo that has his father as Sebastian and his mother as "Dameanna." Maybe the Vincenzo I found in Mussomeli is your ancestor. Or maybe this person on Ancestry has just combined records for 2 different people.

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

James is often an Americanization of Vincenzo.

The surname Genardo does not seen to exist in modern Italy though there is currently a single listing in the Italian telephone directory for Gennardo with two n's.

"De Nardo" is a real possibility however unlikely that may seem.

I did some ...

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

For what's it's worth, I searched Oliveri birth records from 1893 to 1896. Oliveri is a small sea-side comune next to Patti, and next to Marinello frazione in particular. (A GGGF of mine was born in Oliveri.) There were no babies born there with the surname Gelardi, or anything like it or Genardo ...

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

On the card that you found, it has "date and port of arrival" blank. Will it be blank if I order through the National Archives?

Re: Looking for help on Genardo surname

I found a card, similar to that one, on familysearch.org. I'm just hesitant to pay for information that I may or may not get. I've been told he arrived to the US in Lousiana, and so I'm trying to figure it out from that end, but passenger lists are hard to sort through without the correct name.
