for $5.00 you can get a copy of James Genardo's obit, in case that would have any pertinent info-

under 1971 and letter G.

Do you have the links for this record?? I just got his naturalization info in the mail. Contrary to what I had believed before, he came here in 1913 through Detroit. His info states he was born in "Musmali" Italy in 1894 and lived in Naples before coming to the US.

I now think that this is, in fact, his birth record. I can't read it to save my life. Is there anyone who can translate it for me?

Just so you know, the date and manner of arrival shown on naturalization papers is that of the applicant's last arrival into the US. Many immigrants made at least two trips to the US as did my grandfather in 1904 and then again in 1910; it is the 1910 arrival which is listed on his naturalization papers.

That's the same birth record for Vincenzo Genuardi that I linked to earlier. The passenger arrival record that I linked was correct, too. He came through Detroit via Canada.

Here is a translation of the important parts of the birth record:
On 24 Feb 1892 at 8 am in Mussomeli appeared Sebastiano Genuardi, age 50, farmer, resident of Mussomeli, who declared that at 8 pm on the previous day [i.e., the 23rd], in the house on Via Malaspina [the street name], was born to his wife Domenica Pitisi (age 44, farmer, who resides with him) a son named Vincenzo.

I learned that my late great aunt had some papers with history she'd written down and given to my aunt. She said that James' father's name was Sebastian and his mother's was Dameanna. My great-grandfather struggled with English all his life, and on his arrival papers, it says he couldn't read or write. Given that, I'm feeling pretty confident that this is birth record and these are his parents.

Thank you all so much for your help! Now I'm off to search for information on his parents!

What date of birth did Vincenzo's naturalization papers have? 23 Feb 1892 or 1 Oct 1894?

You wouldn't by any chance be trying to claim citizenship jure sanguinis through him, would you? Are you descended from one of his children born before the naturalization?

His papers had 1 Oct 1894, but everything else matches perfectly. I've been told that he never did read or write very well, and he was afraid of telling people who he was. I'm wondering if he got his birth date confused or if he ever really knew it.

I'm not trying to claim citizenship through him, though I am a descendant of one of his children born before his naturalization.
