Re: Surname Practice

It is because the husband was deceased, not that the children were illegitimate. Wives of deceased men were recorded in the Riveli with their husband's surname, with the same surname of the children to follow. Typically, women were recorded with no surname if their husband was still living. I never ...

Re: Locating ancestral homes in Corleone?

Those Riveli are digitized and have been for years. Just recently (last Oct or Nov) there was some sort of contract change with the Archivio di Stato di Palermo that houses the Riveli for all of Sicily, and digitized records of Riveli on FamilySearch are no longer available online or at a family ...

Re: Riveli Records Translation

They're blurry, but the right hand side of the second image lists the two individuals in the household. Under the word "anime" (meaning souls) lists the head first "capo di casa" and the wife (I assume, hard to read) next "moglie". The wives were typically recorded with their maiden names, women ...

Unique Sicilian Names of the past -- Mentioned in Parish Records

Throughout my research I've come across a few unique names that seemed to have been popular around the 15, 16, and 1700s mostly in Sicilia. A few of the names I have not been able to find an origin for, but they were real names that were used. Below are the names that I've came across, feel free to ...

Re: Married at 12 years old

Touching on this, throughout my research in my Sicilian family, I've came to the conclusion that the youngest age for women marrying was roughly 12 years old. Going further back in time, especially within the 16th, 17th, and 18th century in Sicily, a woman marrying at 12 years old was not uncommon ...

Re: The surname David in Sicily.

I'm about 20 years late to this conversation. However, I have come across the surname "David" in my family research. Nicosia, Sicily -- my 11th great-grandmother born about 1560 in Nicosia, Antonina David. I thought at first it was some type of fancy spelling of d'Avia or La Via, but it wasn't too ...

Re: Would a Magister take a new name?

I searched this topic with the same question as you. I noticed some magisters have very "extravagant" names. I never seem to find a baptismal record with that name. My search of interest is in Nicosia, Sicily.

Re: How to obtain death certificate from Fossombrone and Isola di Fano

Thanks. I have seen those. What I am looking for is a place to write to to order a death record from a town hall since online records only go to 1937.

Re: Hoping for assistance on Rizzo family from Nicosia, Sicily..

Hi Mel,

My Rizzo family is from Nicosia. Rizzo was a very common name in Nicosia, and Sicily alone! My great great grandfather Giuseppe Rizzo was bor 3 Jun 1890 in Nicosia to Michele Rizzo and Mattea Scellato. Michele's parents were Giuseppe Rizzo and Rosa Contino. Mattea's were Sigismundo Scellato ...

How to obtain death certificate from Fossombrone and Isola di Fano

I am looking to obtain a death record for my great grandmother Giulia Fabiani. Most likely in Isola di Fano. Her husband Biagio Binotti passed 1917 in Isola di Fano and she was mentioned as still alive. The online records only go to 1937 for death records, and between 1917-1937 there were no death ...

How to find relatives in Isola di Fano, presaro e urbino

My great great grandfather, Emiliano Binotti is from Isola di Fano. He was born in 1888. He is the only child out of the nine that I know of who came to the United States. He had brothers, Aldebrando, Olimpio, Annibale, and Ivo, and he had sisters, Margarita, Maurina, Melania, and Balbina. I am ...
