Re: Birth Certificate "No Record Found"

Yes, I tried to get his certificate from NYC which is how we got the "No Record Found" document. However, the consulate is pretty explicit that they need a long form birth certificate.

I suppose contacting a lawyer may have to be my next move

Re: Italians from different regions in the USA

This is anecdotal; on my father's side my 2nd great-grandfather from Naples married a Sicilian woman. On my mother's side, my great-grandfather from Bari married a woman from Naples. Both marriages occurred in the US, so I wouldn't say it's rare.

Birth Certificate "No Record Found"

I've been trying for months to work with my grandfather to get a copy of his long form birth certificate (He was born in NYC). However, his name was informally anglicized and the Department of Health is extremely strict about all names matching.

What we have received is a certified "No Record Found ...

Re: Any success retrieving documents from Napoli 1865-1900

Hi Edward, these records are from Palermo it seems. Retrieving records from there was relatively easy. Do you know anything for Napoli? The Antenati site does not have records from there during that period.

Any success retrieving documents from Napoli 1865-1900

From what I have read, there are many gaps in the civil records for Napoli between 1865 and 1900. Has anyone had any success getting documents from this period? I'm looking for a birth certificate from 1877 but I'm starting to lose hope.

That's a good theory too! It's definitely some variation of one of these.

Origin of the 'Italian' word "gabachet"

So clearly "gabachet" isn't a real word, but my father and grandfather were discussing the "Brooklyn Italian" word to describe someone as a "pointy head", or someone who inserts themselves into a conversation to start trouble. I guess the closest translation would be a "shit-stirrer" (pardon the ...

Name discrepancies and "One and the Same Person" court orders

Below I have listed some naming discrepancies in my lineage back to Italy. I would like to know the likelihood that I will be required to obtain "One and the Same Person" court orders when I apply for jure sanguinis.

Reputable Document Retrieval Services

I've been having some trouble and cyclical conversations with the Comune di Palermo regarding a birth certificate. At this point, I'm extremely frustrated with the process and I would like to look into hiring a service to retrieve the document, as well as another from Naples.

What are some ...

Re: Gender on results is incorrect. Can it be corrected?

Thank you, Gags. I'm already in contact with the civil status office of Palermo and they responded to my request with the file attached. From what I understand, these are the results of the search, meaning the gender and name are incorrect (it should be Antonina, not Antonino).

I am also unsure if ...

Gender on results is incorrect. Can it be corrected?

I received an email response from the Civil Status office in Palermo informing me of their search results from my birth certificate request for my second great grandmother. Unfortunately, the gender is listed as "maschile" instead of "feminina". Can this be corrected?

Also, how can I request a ...

Re: Next Step for Birth Certificates

These documents will be for citizenship.

I've tried emailing Palermo, but I never received a response. Should I have better luck sending a request in the mail? What information or forms should I include? Similarly for Naples.

Re: How strict are the consulates with spellings and Anglicized names?

I'd like to piggy-back off this question with a similar one;

My great grandfather was born Vincenzo (on his birth certificate and on the 1910 census), but later went by James (marriage/death certificate & 1920/1930/1940 censuses).

I know James was a common anglicization of Vincenzo (Cenz -> James ...

Next Step for Birth Certificates

I've hit a stumbling block while collecting documents. My second great grandparents were both born in Italy and I have all of the information to find their birth certificates, but I've been given the run-around on who to contact to actually request them.
