I have my grandfather's original birth certificate which he brought with him. Do I still need to get an updated copy from the commune or will the consulate accept one so old? I will need to go to the Boston office.

Since documents from Italy do not require apostilles, the original documents are fine. and the good news is that they will keep a copy of it and return the original to you. (They do not need it because it is already on file in the Italian comune of your grandfather's birth.)
