Hi, I"m looking for my italian family members. My great uncle was Angelo M Paonessa. He was born 1878-1879? He is recorded in the 1920 and 1930 censuses in Connecticutt, USA. His sister is my Grandmother, says she is born in New York, so I assume he ported in New York. He was 4 term mayor of New Britaian, Connecticutt. My grandfather made me promise before he died to contact my cousins in Italy. Any help would be appreciated. Angelo's wife's name was Myrtle, born in New York 16 when married, and angelo was 25 when married. So that makes him at least coming over in the early 1900's? Hi: Paonessa surname is tipically of Italy south, (in Calabria: many records Paonessa surname coming from: Catanzaro, Gimigliano, Cortale, San Vito Ionico, Chiaravalle-all in Catanzaro province, and in Campania region: Napoli, Caserta town)...
For better search of italian town's origin, is profit to know the first name of Angelo M. father and /or mother's name...

Thanks Susan, so far I haven't found the parents name, but I"m still struggling in the ancestry.com site. I found Anna, my grandmother's name, and her brothers name (so far) are Anthony, born in New York and Angelo M born in Italy. Any other information appreciated, thought I would search the geneology sites for living relatives, then start here again. I know it must sound amazing for the Italian culture to think I don't know of my relatives even in the United States, very sad indeed, but not fault. Thanks again, Bonnie

Antonio, born Oct. 1889, age 12, born NY
Joseph, born Mar. 1892, age 8, born NY
Annie, born April 1894, age 6, born NY
Lewis, born Nov 1896, age 3, born NY
Assunta, born Oct. 1891, age 1 born NY

in 1910, Angelo is listed in Conn under mispelled name:
Angelo Pansse, age 32, married 8 years, born Itlay, arrived 1888, naturalized
Milda (SP??), age 26, married 8 years, born NY
Constance, age 5, born Conn
Clarice, age 2, born Conn
Ferdinand Halley, father-in-law, age 56, Widow, born NY
Edward Halley, brother-in-law, age 19, born NY
Violet Halley, sister-in-law, age 17, born NY
ED 233, page 34B Hartford, New Britain, Conn

In 1920 census, it states that Angelo was naturalized in 1899...this would be under his father's papers since the whole family naturalized at that time. Look for Tommaso Paenessa's papers.

Also, The family arrived in NY on 13 August 1888 out of Naples on the Elysia.

There is no listing of the home town on the manifest. However, both the Paenessa and Cambrone names are found in Gimiglino for the most part. This is probably where the family came from...
