Anthony Cantone
Re: Anthony Cantone
Are you sure he came in 1891? What do you KNOW about his arrival that can help me identify him?

Re: Anthony Cantone
T,
The census shows him as immigrating in 1891. That is all that I have to go off of.

Re: Anthony Cantone
OK...the 1900 census says 1891, and the 1910 census says 1897.
Probably the 1900 census is correct, but let's hope that he made a trip again in 1897 or later because the early manifests hold very little information.

Re: Anthony Cantone
I am pretty sure they are from Patermo
Re: Anthony Cantone
POSSIBLE manifest for Antonio...
I chose to post this one because the age is close (born about 1866) and the date of arrival is close (1893)... he is from Sciacca (Sicily)...
AND...he is destined for New Orleans, LA
On line 329...

Re: Anthony Cantone
Sorry
it was line 529...
On this manifest there is a female named Angela on the next line, also from Sciacca, and below her is a Rosario Cantone (age 5 months) also from Sciacca.
Not saying it's definite, but Angela could be Angelina, and Rosario could be the son suanj found in the census called "Russ" - On the census the birth date of Russ is about Nov 1892...
This might also give a clue to Antonio's father's first name. Because of naming traditions...Rosario would have been named for his grandfather.

Re: Anthony Cantone
T,
This might be them. From what I have found, she was 2 years older than him. It shows her as 26 and him as 24. Also, we never knew their oldest son's real name. Everyone called him Russo. However, my 94 year old aunt just confirmed that her dad's name was Rosario. So this puts them arriving in 1893 from Sciacca with a 5 month old.
The only question I have is we were told Angelina's name was Saladino. I can't make out the name on the manifest. It looks like Jeauir? Any insight?

Re: Anthony Cantone
It definitely starts with an "F" - (check out other names like "Forno" that have that same letter)
I would guess the name is either Fauci or Fanci...but it would be a stretch to get it to Saladino...

Re: Anthony Cantone
Angelina, or Angela's maiden name seems to be Fouiccio, so that is probably her. That could be her, but according to the ship manifest, she was 26 in 1893. This puts her born in 1867. I am new to this, so I am not sure if that 6 year age gap is significant, or if the records were incomplet.
Re: Anthony Cantone
Just found it interesting...
You are absolutely right! You must always take into account the differences in birthdate or age (depending on the document you are taking the information from>) Death records are not always accurate, nor are census records (though they are better)... And as you can see the TRANSCRIPTION of records can really throw off the spelling!
The records at Familysearch are definitely NOT complete. You must use many sources to confirm what you have discovered.
Have you used the LDS Family History Center Microfilms?
So...keep looking...
Good luck!

Re: Anthony Cantone
T,
I am not familiar with LDS Family History Center. Is that online?
Also, we think Angela may have been married before. My aunt claims she was named after her father's sister, Marie Fouiccio. We know we have a Frank and Marie Fouiccio in our tree. It is possible that she could have had those children before meeting Anthony. The only hole in this theory is that they are not on the manifest. It seems the further I go back, the more confused I am.
Thanks,
ERic

Re: Anthony Cantone
Eric,
The LDS Family History Center nearest you can be found by clicking on the following link and putting in your zip code.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
The films need to be rented at the center and viewed there. They cost about $5.50 a month to rent, renewable.
They have birth, marriage and death records for Sciacca from 1820 - 1929.
Here is the list of films you can view.
