Still No Luck

Post by tonij16102 »

I have been trying without any luck to trace a my great-aunt Virginia Messina D'Orazio Malizia. She was born in Brooklyn, NY to my great-parents Vincenzo and Concetta Palmieri Messina. The family left NY and moved to Hillsville, Pennsylvania in the early 1900's. Virginia married a gentleman by the last name of D'Orazio she divorced him back then unheard of. She was remarried to another gentleman by the last name of Malizia. I don't know if she married him in Hillsville, Pennsylvania or if she met him in New Haven, Ct. The only reason I know this is through my grandmother's obituary. Any ideas where to start? Any help wld be greatly appreciated.

I know it's a long-shot...could this be your great-aunt Virginia?

Marriage in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1941

Groom's Name: Saccarnandi
Bride's Name: Virginia Dorazio
Marriage License Year: 1941
License Number: 743043
Image Number: 00221
Digital Folder Number: 4141873
Collection: Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Marriage Indexes, 1885-1951

It's just a marriage index. Date of record is Oct. 27, 1941
You would have to send for the marriage license using the # above.
The entry is on the second line...

Tessa78-

The collection you referenced, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Marriage Indexes, 1885-1951, did you find that on Ancestry? Would you be willing to share where it can be found?

Thank you,

Hi Carmine it is surely the correct family; me too found it, but you more fast; in adding:
in 1910 the family:
1910 United States Federal Census
about Katie Messino Name: Katie Messino
Age in 1910: 47
Estimated birth year: abt 1863
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Home in 1910: Mahoning, Lawrence, Pennsylvania
Marital Status: Widowed
Race: White
Year of immigration: 1889
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Katie Messino 47
Annie Messino 16
Antoniette Messino 15
Fred Messino 14 b. 3 Jul 1895 NY
Guseppe Messino 9
Petro Messino 7
Sam Gupfrancso 36 boarder

the oldest daughter, Louisa, maybe married.. I am pretty sure that Katie is Concetta, and by Fred Messina military record:
World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 about Fred Messina
Name: Fred Messina
County: Lawrence
State: Pennsylvania
Birthplace: New York;United States of America
Birth Date: 3 Jul 1895
Race: Caucasian (White)
FHL Roll Number: 1893482
DraftBoard: 1

born in New York;
so maybe Virginia born after the 1900 census, or maybe Virginia had a different first name at birth...

This is indeed the correct family. I have talked to an aunt that told me the Virginia's name was Louisa, Anna Messina is my great-aunt, Antoniette is my grandmother and the boys in this family are my great-uncles. I have found my great-grandmother Concetta Messina in the 1910 censuses and by this time Louisa was already married to her first husband whose last name was D'Orazio and they also lived in Hillsville, Pennsylvania. I don't know when they were divorced and when she remarried her second husband whose last name was Malizia. In the obituary for my grandmother it was stated she lived in Ct. Thanks for all of the help

I no found further input, but maybe I found Virginia’s daughter:
1920 United States Federal Census about Amelia Dorazio
Name: Amelia Dorazio
Home in 1920: Clairton, Allegheny, Pennsylvania
Age: 7
Estimated birth year: abt 1913
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Relation to Head of House: Niece
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Sex: Female
Neighbors: View others on page

Household Members: Name Age
Tony Palumbo
55
Saveria Palumbo
47
Nick Palumbo
23
Felix Palumbo
18
Dominick Rosetti
46
Amelia Dorazio
7

I am pretty sure that this Amelia Dorazio( D’Orazio) is Virginia’s daughter; she was the niece of Saveria Palumbo( nee D’Orazio);
Saveria was a sister of Virginia first husband: Falcio( maybe Felice right spell) D’Orazio;
Saveria and children emigrated in 1903 :

First Name: Saveria
Last Name: D'Orazio
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian South
Last Place of Residence: Fiosolone
Date of Arrival: Jul 28, 1903
Age at Arrival: 31y Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Umbria (1902)
Port of Departure: Napoli
Manifest Line Number: 0008

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0008

and joining at husband Antonio Palumbo ( aka Tony) in Pennsylvania; Saveria coming from Frosolone, Molise region, Italy.
Also Antonio Palumbo coming from Frosolone and emigrated in 1902:

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0006
by that we can understand that Virginia divorced from Falcio(?) between 1910 and 1920, and the children, one, the daughter lived with aunt, and James( or maybe Vincent, normally James was used for Vincenzo first name) who know where he lived?

In 1920 no trace of Virginia, no by Dorazio surname no by Malizia surname..

Thank-you very much for this information. When Virginia divorced the first husband she did leave the children behind. Where do I go from here? I am dumb-founded on this one.

I have no idea where she was married or divorced or what her second husbands name was. All I know is she married Falico D'Orazio on or abt May 25,1906 in Hillsville, Pennsylvania. I have an obituary for her brother that had listed as Virgina Millazzo and another as Virginia Miliziaand she was already deceased already in 1979 this was published in her brother Pete's obituary. This is all I know to this point. Is there anyway to trace her daughter or son?
