Dragone, Turko Italian war

Post by Eric1523 »

Hello All,

I am new here, and will be continuing to read everything I can, I have learned so much already.

I am wondering where to begin my Italian research. My Great Grandfather and Grandmother came from two towns close to each other in Avellino. The names are Leone Dragone, and Anna Tarantino.

In addition to wanting to know anything I can, I am specifically interested in Leone's service in the Cavalry in the Turko Italian war in Libya. If anyone knows ranks from 1911-1914 it would be helpful. I can barely read his 1915 WWI US draft registration card. I think it's corporale maggiore.

Here is the info for the couple:
Leone Dragone,
b: 21 APR 1889 Cairano, Avellino
Came to US several times, last time in 1914-15

Anna Tarantino
12 OCT 1895 Andretta, Avellino
Came to US in 1914

Any suggestions for what records can be obtained? I don't have the $1000 that one place suggested I spend for a compan to research for me.

The family history library has the civil records for Anfretta and Cairano, Provincia Avellino in ttheir microfilm which covers all births, arriages and deaths from 1809 to 1910 and further you can trace both familis back to 1809. As ofr the miliatry record you can write to ARCHIVIO DI STATO DI AVELLINO,Via S. Soldi 9, Postale 83100, Avellino, Camapania region and request his miliatry REGISTRO DI LEVA (conscription records) which will provide all vital data plu miliatry action, awards or wounds. Write in Italian if possible (try www.freetranslation.com) or in simple sentences asking for his miliatry records. The Directress for the Provincial archives is Ms. Gerardina R., De Luca. Good Luck Peter

Thanks Peter,

From the other posts on this site, I expected a reply from you, but not so quickly. Thanks!

I have found a couple pre-translated requests at:

http://www.mangeruca.com/military_records.htm

I am on Ancestry.com, and have done a bit of other searching there, but have no experience with actual microfilm records. I have heard of the family history library, and assume I must go there. I will check first with my local LDS chruch. I have been there once.

Thanks for the heads up on the miliatry lettters. it will be useful I am sure.By the way, they usually have staff members familiar with the areas you come from in Italy and can help out immensley if yiou run into troiuble at the local level. if your relatives ever had porperty in Italy the Notary records at the proinvical level will have all the owners vital data.
