One of my husband's ancestors was described as a "fabricatore" in his 1835 death record. Does anyone know if this can be translated generally as "craftsman," or does it imply a certain type of manufacturing, or even have some other significance?

"Fabbricatore", is the italianization of the Campania dialect word "Fravecatore", that means "bricklayer".
It is also a quite common surname.

Sometimes you will see "Fabricatore di ..." - "Maker of..." which will then specify what he makes

A "fabbricantore" is a builder.

I'm familiar with "fabricatore di." This is just fabricatore, not fabricantore--hence the question.
