At a dead end

Post by Sher »

I've been searching for my great-grandfather, Vincenzo Bisconti, for quite a while now. Unfortunately, I can find almost nothing!!

According to my grandmother, she was told that her father, Vincenzo, was born in Pianella, Italy in 1887. He left home at a young age (14 I think) and made his way to France. After an undetermined amount of time in France, he immigrated to the USA. She also said that she remembers him going back to Italy to visit sisters and his mother, but not when.

The only piece of information that I have uncovered is through Ellis Island. He came in 1906 to visit his "uncle" Francesco.

According to the LDS microfilm, there is NO Vincenzo Bisconti born in 1887 or any year around then. :(

Does anyone have anything that may help lead me in the right direction? This is driving me nuts!

Was he in the US when he passed away? If he worked in the US, you might find him in Social Security.

Hi Sherry,

I see that you are from Ohio. Is there any chance that Vincenzo died in Ohio? There is a Vincenz J Bisconti who died on November 12, 1961 at the age of 74 (1887 birth year) The listing says Youngstown, Mahoning County.

If this isnt him, have you asked your Grandmother where he died?
There are 2 items that may help you, his death record from the town or county he died in and also the obituary (usually in the local library newspaper archives)

if you know that the 1906 arrival at Ellis was definately him, have you written to the Dept of Justice for copies of his naturalization papers?

If none of this works come back and we'll try something different.

There are a couple more enteries that could be applicable:

Nov. 1, 1902 on the La Champagne

http://stevemorse.org/goulnik/match1.ph ... e=1&fail=0

The second was Feb. 14, 1906 on the ship Hamburg. Indexed as Vincenso Biccenti, but if you look at the manifest it looks like Bisconti. Also, he was headed to Ohio...

http://stevemorse.org/goulnik/match1.ph ... e=1&fail=0

The one thing that will help you the most is to determine...through records...the date of birth for your ggfather. Find his death record. A cemetery record. Something that will give you an indication of what the date of birth is. It could be off up to a number of years...most Italians did not keep track of their date of birth as rigorously as we do and most children had no real idea... so it can be in the records...but off from what you think. And despite everything, most kids did not leave home at 14 and go by themselves anywhere. Most kids under 16 traveled with an adult or older sibling. So off to France on his own at 14 might have been off at age 16 or 17...there are always exceptions.

Where did he live in the US? Was it Ohio? Did he go by Vincenzo or something else like James? Can't find him in the census to see what the arrival dates should be.

If you can give out where he should be in the census, we can check and see if we can track an age for him.

Here's the one page manifest you speak of... it also looks as if 1906 was his first trip to the USA? And is not married...

Looks like he didn't feel to well on this trip either. His final destination would be to Trinidad, Colorado... but would be joining "uncle" Francesco... who would be in Davidson, New Mexico. ?

Did you ever find out who this
"uncle" Francesco
was?

Do you know who his siblings are? Can you mention anything about his wife? That would really help. :P If we can find a census, then that should maybe give us more info... Also where did he settle in the USA?

First Name: Vincenzo
Last Name: Bisconti (born about 1885)
Ethnicity: Italy
Last Place of Residence: Pianella
Date of Arrival: September 24, 1906
Age at Arrival:  21y    Gender:  M    Marital Status:  S
Ship of Travel: La Gascogne
Port of Departure: Havre
Manifest Line Number: 0003

From what I can make out from Sher's previous posts, Vincenzo also went by the name James. His wife from what I can see was named Michelina di Cicco.

The 1930 federal census for Lowellville, Mahoning, Ohio shows James age 42 and Michelina age 36. The di Cicco family is living next door. The census indicates that "James" immigrated in 1906 and that he married at the age of 27 (1915 +- a year marriage) That marriage document could be another source for information.

So it appears the 1906 Ellis record is probably correct. If you have the films for Pianella? Have you looked for a Gennaro in the birthyear time frame?

Hi everyone!

I have his passenger record from Ellis Island arriving in 1906 to visit his "uncle" Francesco in New Mexico. I can't find anything on him from that point until the 1920 and 1930 census living in Lowellville, Ohio, with wife Michelina & children (1920 listed his last name as Piscano). I was able to make thes connections due to the fact that my grandmother remembered living in Lowellville. His marriage licen

I already have a copy of his death certifacte (Ohio), but the informant was my uncle (grandmother's brother) and there is no knowledge on it regarding parentage. The birthdate states May 13, 1887. I guess that was why I was looking around that year in the microfilm. I did locate a Vincenzo Bisconti born in Pianella in 1877 and another in 1979 from the same parents (first must have died). He would have been a "brother" to Francesco.

My grandmother does not remember him ever talking about himself, although there was not a good relationship between him and his children.
After her mother died in 1935, the kids basically raised themselves. None of my living aunts and uncles are able to shed any light on his past. All that they say is and that he was known to just pick up and go to New Mexico at any given moment and then come back.

I have not applied for his social security application yet. Thanks, that never entered in my thoughts! Did he have to be naturalized in order to have an application?

suanj, is it possible for me to request a search in birthregistries when I no so little information? :?

    Hi again Sherry,

The "Uncle Francesco" made 2 trips. the first May 27 1899
The 2nd was Novemeber 3, 1905. he states he was travelling to his brother Vincenzo at 207 Commercial St, Trinidad, Colorado. The same town that your Vincenzo stated he was going to in 1906.

The "brother Vincenzo" appears to have made the trip November 1, 1902 but the image is wrong so I cant see what info is there.

Where did the family live in New Mexico? I dont have a map of NM to see if the town stated "Davson, Darson, Danson"? is the correct spelling.

Based on the natural childrens ages and where they were born, I would look for that marriage document in NM between the years 1914-1917. Most marriage records show parents names.

I thought it was Danson too... and all I got was "Ted Danson..."when I "googled"..

I think the town is Davidson, New Mexico....

oh yes, I tried to look into the 1902 manifest and they just are "inaccessible"... meaning no way you will view these on the internet...(for now) but would have to order Family History Film... which does exist.

And we do see a compassionate side of Vincenzo here too... it does look like he could be visiting an ill brother... a brother who may have been ill for awhile?

    Hi...

It is conjuctivitus....only it was signed by Dr. Menio... There is a Dr. on the line as well...hard to see because it is written over. Guess it didn't keep him from entering the country at that point! Lucky...
