Line across name on ship manifest
What does it mean if there is a line running straight across a specific name on a manifest ? Also, circa 1900 what was the general time journey from Italy to America by ship ?

A line through a passenger entry can mean that the person did not sail on that voyage (most common reason) OR that they are listed on another part of the manifest.gentilejoy@yahoo.com wrote:What does it mean if there is a line running straight across a specific name on a manifest ? This site may help you understand the different markings on manifests

As for the journey, it would generally be about 11 days to 2 weeks depending on what port your ancestor departed from and how many other ports the ship needed to stop at to pick up passengers after that. On the manifest itself there is usually a departure date and an arrival date for each port.

Thanks, Tessa.
So if I understood correctly, a line across the name generally meant the person was set to sail, but was a "no show" for whatever reason. That would make a lot of sense since it appears a month later, he sailed out from another ship to America.

Re: Line across name on ship manifest
Could it also mean that the person was denied entry into the US?
Re: Line across name on ship manifest
Usually passengers who might not be allowed entry were detained after arrival so they would still appear on the ship manifest...Italia1963 wrote:Could it also mean that the person was denied entry into the US?
There were many who were detained for a variety of reasons, and they were listed on a "Detained Passengers List"
On this list it would have been indicated the outcome of the detention and if they were deported (not allowed entry) it would be listed.
Lines through passengers names generally mean they did not sail on that voyage.
