Online records for Vietri di Potenza at familysearch.org

I actually had started to look to see if there were other children who married there-so you can do this, if you have the time

The international version of Ancestry has an index for those records that is easily accessible unlike Familysearch. I only subscibe to the US version of Ancestry so I will go the the library to use the international version.

Also, the Felitti family used the surname Felitto in the US. Does this seem unusual?

Just thinking: We have been looking at the Atti di Matrimonio (Marriage Act). I haven't looked to see whether there are any "Pubblicazioni di Matrimonio" (Marriage Banns) for this town. The name might be clearer on the Marriage Banns if they are there.

A good idea, but I see that the publications jump from 1879 to 1881. I don't see 1880 unless they are out of order.
Erudita
Hi Erudita

It looks like 1880 Banns for this town are on Ancestry.com so I'll see if someone is able to post for us to look at.

Potenza, Basilicata, Italy, Civil Registration Records, 1861-1938

Could someone who subscribes to ancestry.com please look to see if there are marriage banns for Antonio Colucci and Maria Luigia Felitti for the year 1880 and post here. They would have been posted mid to late October/November 1880. Thank you.

Ancestry.com: http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1886

Province: Potenza
Locality: Vietri Di Potenza
Record Type: Pubblicazioni di Matrimonio
Year: 1880

Thank you.

Perfect! Thank you so much Livio.

So - I think we can call it a "fait accompli". I believe we can safely say Antonio's dad was Gaetano.

Thank you so much Livio, Angela and Erudita! You solved the mystery! I didn't realize that each marriage had 2 different documents. Knowing that now will help me a lot in finding some other records.

You should also check, when available, the ALLEGATI documents. They usually contain the documents needed to register a record. For marriages you would find the birth extracts or certificates for both spouses, death certificates of a previous deceased spouse. Death of parents, if their consent was needed, etc...

Fantastic! This is good to hear and you are very welcome.

Like Erudita I also went through some of the Marriage Acts looking for possible siblings but didn’t see anything obvious there (but there were Colucci/Felitti/Grieco marriages there that you may be familiar with. I was just concentrating on Antonio’s possible siblings which I personally didn’t see there. I think that you may find these on films prior to 1876.)

Anyways, I have saved the links to the Marriage indices for the years 1876-1890 inclusive. Unfortunately 1875 wasn’t there. If you don’t have the indices for these years and would like to have them let me know and I’ll forward them on. They are good to have for a quick look up if you know exactly what you are looking for and also as a point of reference.

( I do however find it more thorough, when I am doing my own personal research, to go through the respective years page by page, particularly with births and deaths, because you often come across relatives who may have been witnesses to events, held office at the town hall etc (their ages and occupations are usually included). It also gives you a sense of what may have been happening at that particular point in history. The other reason I go through page by page is because sometimes I have found there is error in the indices – deaths/births not recorded, deaths/births recorded but not there or index # misrecorded.)

In case you haven’t seen this, these are the films available for Vietri di Potenza.

The films 1866-1910 are of course already on line at family search. The films prior to 1866 you would need to rent through a Family History Library. (You will know what you have available on Ancestry.com)

Hi Angela - I would love to have the links to the Marriage indices. Familysearch doesn't have them making research very difficult. My email is tech@juno.com. Thank you for your help!
