Ancient profession, Naples
Ancient profession, Naples
Hi,
could you help me identifying this profession?
The first prefix is obviously " M.ro " which stands for "Mastro".
The problem is the following word.
I just know the first letter is " S " and finishes in " ro ".
The location in near Naples, so it could be also a dialectal form.

Sorry for the pic's quality, this is what I've got!
Thanks!!

Here are a number of links to Neopolitan dialect. I can't find the occupation, but my guess is that he was a cobbler, and that the word is a form of calzolaio (looks like scalzolaio or scalzolaro, but I've never seen the occupation written with an ro at the end). The title would have been used with that occupation if he was a master cobbler.

Thank you very much Erudita74 !Here are a number of links to Neopolitan dialect.
I really appreciate those links, very useful !
As you said, it could be another form of "Calzolaio" such as "Scalzolaro", but maybe it was just a writing mistake! In fact I've already found others...I can't find the occupation, but my guess is that he was a cobbler, and that the word is a form of calzolaio (looks like scalzolaio or scalzolaro, but I've never seen the occupation written with an ro at the end). If anyone has other suggestion, they are welcomed!

You said in your initial query that the location was NEAR Naples. What specific town are you referring to?

For the next occupation above - can you post the entire (or a good portion) of the document so we can get a look at the formation of letters throughout? It would really help ...

Re: Ancient profession, Naples
Might it be "Copetaro" - maker/manufacturer of Torrone (nougat)?

Happy to help
Here's a step by step clip, with subtitles, on how to make homemade Torrone, in case anyone is interested. I would reduce the sugar content.
