I thought it read Varsalona, but I have never heard that surname before.

It was not unusual for names that began with V to also be spelled with a B and vice-versa. For example, Bella and Vella were frequently interchanged, and also Bavuso and Vavuso, Bisconti and Visconti, etc. There was a normal name Barsalona in parts of Sicily - maybe Varsalona was a variant spelling of the same name.
