Santoro-birth, marriage
Santoro-birth, marriage
Hello,
You have all been such great help to me in the past. I am hoping you can help me find any information on my great-grandfather Donato Santoro? He was from Teano, Italy I am told, and was also married there to my great-grandmother Caterina Grandi(e). I have lots of info on ancestry.com of his life in the US but nothing before that. I am hoping you can help me find him in Italy.
Thanks you for any help,
Sharon

Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
Can you provide an approximate year of birth?
Where in US did he settle?

Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
The year of birth I have for Donato is 1861 and his wife Caterina is July 1862. They settled in the state of Rhode Island. I have an immigration arrival of April 7, 1893. Hope this helps. Thank you. Sharon
Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
I noticed on the 1910 US Census, that Donato and Caterina's son Erminio was born in Italy.
Here is his birth act on 4 December 1895 in Teano

Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
Thank you Tessa, is there someone who can translate it for me. I can see the names but am unable to read the second page especially? Does it mention any other names or information as to where in Teano they lived?
Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
They lived in Tranzi, a hamlet/village of the Comune of Teano
#496
Dated 5 December 1895 at 8 AM at the town office.
Before the official... of the comune of Teano appeared Michealina Izzo, 66, farmer residing in Tranzi, to declare that at 6 PM on the 4th of the current month at the house at Vico Fasipieoro(?) with no number, to Caterina Grande* (then the rest of the line is underlined meaning that it was in error - the correction is on the second page)
was born a male child who was presented [to the official] and to that child was given the name ERMINIO
To the above [presentation and declaration] and this record were witnesses: Antonio Izzo, 36, laborer; and Giovanni Caparco, 56, laborer, both residents of this town. (Here is the continuation of the error corrention) * ...farmer, wife of Donato Santoro, farmer residing in Tranzi...
The declarant [Izzo] made the declaration of the birth above in the place of the head of the family, as she helped with the delivery of Grande in her home, and her husband [the father] was not able to make the declaration of the above birth because he was in a foreign place.
The official read the act to all present and only he signed as the others were illiterate.

Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
ALSO*** I have located birth of the oldest son listed on the 1910 US Census in Rhode Island...
Birth act of oldest son, Antonio Santoro in 1888
#357
Dated 25 August 1888 at 10:26 AM at the town office in Teano
Appearing before the official was Donato Santoro, age 27, farmer residing in Tranzi, to declare that at 11:30 PM on the 22nd of the current month, at the house at Vico Fontanielo(?) #3 to Caterina Grande, his wife, farmer residing with him, was born a male child who was presented to the official and to whom was given the name ANTONIO
Witnesses to the record: Michele De Fusco, 40, laborer; and Carmine Mas???, 46, laborer, both residents of this town.
Only the official signed the act as the others were illiterate.

EDIT TO ADD***
Daughter Maria's 1925 Rhode Island Census card gives her birth as June 1890 in Italy.
I checked the June records for 1889, 1890 and 1891, but did not find her.
I also searched for a marriage act for Donato and Caterina.
Went page by page in most of the records (indexes were few and far between) and did not find them.
The publication of marriage banns online records do not cover the approximate year of their marriage.
Perhaps they were married in another town. Would have to find out if Caterina Grande was born in Teano or another location.

Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
This is wonderful Tessa. It would be nice to find something that listed there parents. Caterina's father I have his name as being Paride Grande but I have no place of birth for them. Thank you again for all you do!!
Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
Here is the arrival manifest for Caterina and 4 of her children in August 1896
It appears that the third child, 4yo Silvia died on board ship.

Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
Hi Tessa,
I have a Silvio (male not female) listed in the 1900 census born March 1892 being 8 years of age. I also have him being buried in the US (R.I.) on Oct.24, 1902 at the age of 11. Not sure why the manifest is different?
Thank you for continuing the search,
Sharon

Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
Tessa,
I have Donato & Caterina's daughter listed as Marie Carmina Santoro and her husband Pasquale Grande is listed as being born in Teano also Nov. 1, 1891. Don't know if this helps in finding Marie's birth but if you find anything on Pasquale that would be nice too. Just more info for you.
Thanks,
Sharon

Re: Santoro-birth, marriage
The manifest has both Silvia/o and Emilia/o listed as females... (not an unusual error for young children)sahartung wrote:Hi Tessa,

The notation at the end of the line for Silvia/o indicates a death, with date and cause listed with code "23-10"
