Barcelina?

Post by PageAdams »

Hello all!

I thought I would get your advice on reading the birthplace on a marriage certificate. I believe it says "Barcelina." I can't seem to find any place in Italy by that name. We are all fairly confident that he was born in the Naples area. Any advice?

Thank you!

Hi Erudita,

That's interesting. We don't think he was born in Sicily (that would change everything we know about our family if true!). He always told us Naples. Below is his info. I'm looking for his hometown to find his birth certificate:

Giuseppe Russo (went by Joseph after he immigrated)
Lived in: Utica, Oneida County, New York
Born: 1885 (likely Naples)
Immigrated: around 1908 (likely didn't arrive with parents - maybe his father, but not his mother)
Father: Ferdinando Russo
Mother: Giuseppina Calabrise
Spouse: Caterina Sardarele (married in the U.S.)

His WWI draft registration card is showing his date of birth as March 19, 1884. I checked a few years of the online Barcellona records and don't see his birth record there.

I see a photo and obit for him in the Utica NY Daily Press-1961 (the date looks like May 13). It says he was born in Salerno, but I don't know if that info is accurate or not. I'll try to see if I can provide you with a link. I seem to have a problem linking to these articles.

for the obit-go to the following website and type in the name of the newspaper and info I gave you below and you will see the obit

I'm also trying to access the lista di leva from the Archivio di Stato di Salerno, but the site is currently freezing up my computer. Maybe someone else is will have better luck or I will try again later. If he was born in that Province, we should find his info there. That would help us confirm his town of birth.

Here's your town of birth- Bracigliano

Russo
Nome: Giuseppe
Classe: 1884
Comune di nascita: Bracigliano

Hi Erudita,

Thanks for your help! I can't believe you found his home town from knowing that he was born in Salerno. This is very helpful in finding records for him. Thank you a million!! My next step is to search Archivio di Stato di Salerno for his birth record, but the site says "images not yet available". It looks like FamilySearch.com does not *yet* have the records: https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Italy, ... l_Records)

You mentioned having trouble with the Archivio di Stato di Salerno website. Is there any other way to obtain birth records for Salerno online?

I'm glad I found the newspaper obit, as if I hadn't seen it, I would never had thought to search for his lista di leva info from the Archivio di Stato di Salerno.

You might try contacting the stato civile of the town directly to see if you can get a copy of his birth record. It's not currently on microfilm.

ARCHIVIO DI STATO DI SALERNO

Info:

Direttore: dott.ssa Imma ASCIONE (interim)
Comune: Salerno
Indirizzo: Piazza Abate Conforti 7
CAP: 84126
Provincia: SA
Regione: Campania
Telefono: 089 225044
Fax: 089226641
Email: as-sa@beniculturali.it

Once you register for the website with a username and password, then you can check the option at the left for inventory online. That will then give you an option for the lista di leva which is where I found his and his brother's info.

To see if you can get a copy of Giuseppe’s birth record-try contacting the stato civile of the town of Bricigliano.
