can anyone help me translate the bottom part of the birth record which pertains to the mother?
I think it says something like a non married, non relative mature woman, who refuses to give custody? Or is in a grade that precludes a union?
The record is for Rosa Lo Tacano.
Help??
Was the mother an umarried woman?

Rosa was born from Lo Iacono's natural union with an unmarried woman who was not a relative or in any degree connected to him that would prove an obstacle to her recognizing this infant.

Thank you. Do you know why they didn't usually actually name the woman? I mean the town had to know already.

The parents were, more than likely, not married (at least not in a civil ceremony) at the time of the birth. You need to search for the marriage record of the parents, if you don't already have it, to determine if the mother then came forward, admitted to being the child's mother, and recognized Rosa as being her legitimate daughter. It's very possible though that the couple had previously had a church marriage, but the civil state, after the unification of Italy, did not recognize church marriages.

I just checked the online civil marriage records for the years 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, (1899 is missing), 1900. I don't see a civil marriage for him in any of these years.
That's all I can do for now.

Very Interesting. Thank you. And thank you for going the extra step for me. That just saved me an incredible amount of time.

You're very welcome. Sorry I wasn't successful in tracking down a civil marriage record for them.
