I am trying to determine if a family cousin from Gioiosa Marea, Francesco Molica Nardo, might have served in the Italian army during World War I. He would have turned 40 in 1915. I would guess this makes it unlikely he was conscripted, but I am not certain; nor do I know if he could have volunteered at that age.

Men born between the years 1874 and 1900 were called up to serve in WWI in Italy. So your cousin, born 1875, would have been conscripted, even though he was age 40 in 1915. By the end of the war, the oldest was age 44 and the youngest age 18. See page 224, next to last paragraph in left column, in the link below:
