Can you apply for citizenship (jure sanguinis) in Italy?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Can you apply for citizenship (jure sanguinis) in Italy?

Post by goldenc »

Hi,

Running into some problems getting an appointment with my consulate because they're booked out for several years and the calendar doesn't extend beyond that (so I can't even get an appt for 3 years in the future).

Is there any way to make my appointment in Italy? Is there an office / location where you can apply for citizenship where I can check the appointment schedules? I'm willing to fly to Italy for this (it's been about 8 months since I was in Italy last so I would enjoy the trip).

Yes you can. You Must be a resident though in italy during that time or hire a lawyer. Luigi paino for example . You need to enter italy from outside the EU such as the UK go register state your intent to apply etc. Long story short yes you can apply with in italy but there are many details to be sorted out. I would suggest if you do hiring a lawyer and consulting them

And bear in mind, the process may take some time. A short trip will not likely be sufficient.

Thank you for replying! What if I am staying on a work visa in another EU country? Should I apply through a consulate in the country I reside?

If you establish official residency, you apply at the consulate that serves that area.

Keep in mind some of the documents you need the consulate there will send back to the consulate that has jurisdiction where they are issued. My family did it in nyc while my brother lives in japan. we got recognized then he had to submit his birth certificate to the tokyo consulate who sent it back to NYC ( where I could have dropped it off to them to send to tokyo) aand then the NYC consulate sent it back like 6 months later. Keep in mind I got it aspostilled at the NY department of state and everthying. I was very thorough. So if you are from a jurisdiction where they tend to be hard asses you may not get it that quick anyway.
